Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming business operations, but the 2025 "Getting Paid In America" survey by PayrollOrg (PAYO) reveals significant worker discomfort with its use in payroll processes. Conducted during National Payroll Week, September 1–5, 2025, the survey highlights the need for human oversight and transparency to build trust in AI-driven payroll systems.
34% of workers are uncomfortable with AI calculating their wages.
45% oppose AI handling payroll inquiries, preferring human support.
Survey included 25,900+ respondents, conducted by PayrollOrg.
Human oversight is critical to building trust in AI payroll systems.
Transparency in AI use can ease worker concerns.
AI efficiency must align with personalized employee support.
The 2025 "Getting Paid In America" survey, conducted by PayrollOrg, gathered insights from over 25,900 respondents. Of the 22,464 who answered questions about AI in payroll, 34% (7,588 respondents) expressed discomfort with AI calculating their wages. An even higher 45% (10,108 respondents) were uneasy about AI tools answering payroll inquiries instead of human representatives. These findings underscore a widespread hesitation among workers regarding AI’s role in managing their pay.
As organizations increasingly adopt AI to streamline payroll processes, the survey results highlight the importance of maintaining human oversight. Employees value personalized support, particularly for sensitive tasks like payroll, where accuracy and timeliness are critical. Teresa Smith, director of human insights at UKG, emphasized, “Payroll isn’t just a transaction; it’s a reflection of how much an organization values its people. When a single week’s delay in pay can cause financial strain, speed and accuracy aren’t just operational decisions, they are strategic imperatives.” Combining AI’s efficiency with human-centric processes is essential to addressing worker concerns.
To mitigate discomfort, organizations must prioritize clear communication about how AI is used in payroll systems. Transparency around data handling, error prevention, and compliance can help workers feel more confident. The survey suggests that fostering trust requires balancing technological advancements with the personalized support employees expect, ensuring payroll processes remain accurate and reliable.
Payroll plays a pivotal role in shaping employee trust and organizational credibility. As Smith noted, “Every paycheck sends a message: ‘You matter.’ To lead, organizations must make that message loud and clear.” By integrating AI thoughtfully—ensuring it enhances rather than replaces human oversight—businesses can improve operational efficiency while maintaining employee confidence and financial well-being.
The survey findings serve as a reminder that while AI offers significant potential for payroll efficiency, its adoption must be paired with strategies that prioritize trust and transparency. By addressing worker concerns and maintaining human oversight, organizations can leverage AI to enhance payroll processes while reinforcing their commitment to their workforce.
