The CompTIA Tech Jobs Report for August 2025 reveals a complex tech hiring landscape, with significant job growth alongside declines in certain areas. Despite an estimated net increase of 247,000 tech occupation jobs across industries, tech sector employment and job postings saw reductions, highlighting ongoing inconsistencies in the market.

  • Tech occupations grew by 247,000 jobs in August 2025.

  • Tech sector companies cut 2,311 positions overall.

  • Job postings for tech roles dropped 2.6% from July to 446,763.

  • AI skills demand surged 94% year-over-year, per CompTIA’s index.

  • Top roles include software developers (37,180 new postings).

  • Only Maine, Delaware, and Idaho saw job posting increases.

Tech Occupation Growth Amid Sector Challenges

Tech occupation employment, spanning all industries, increased by an estimated 247,000 workers in August, reaching 6.9 million professionals, according to CompTIA’s analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. However, the tech sector itself saw a net reduction of 2,311 positions, with July’s decline revised to show a smaller drop. “Unevenness in the data means acknowledging the employers and job seekers struggling with a multitude of challenges but also recognizing it is not all doom and gloom,” said Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA.

Job Postings Decline but AI Demand Soars

Active tech job postings fell 2.6% to 446,763 in August, with 186,769 new listings added, per CompTIA’s analysis of Lightcast data. Key roles in demand included software developers and engineers (37,180 postings), systems engineers and architects (15,871), tech support (12,822), and cybersecurity engineers and analysts (10,963). Notably, AI skills requirements surged, with CompTIA’s AI Hiring Intent Index reporting a 94% increase compared to August 2024, reflecting growing employer focus on AI expertise.

Experience Levels and Regional Trends

The report highlights that 29% of tech job openings targeted candidates with 4-7 years of experience, 21% sought 0-3 years, and 16% required 8 or more years. Regionally, job posting growth was minimal, with only Maine, Delaware, and Idaho reporting increases of less than 100 new postings each. At the metro level, San Jose saw a modest rise of 127 postings, while Little Rock led with a 10% increase, from 987 to 1,090.

The August 2025 CompTIA Tech Jobs Report underscores a dynamic but uneven tech hiring environment, with strong occupational growth tempered by sector-specific challenges and selective regional gains. For more details, visit https://www.comptia.org/en-us/resources/researc...
