As AI, economic uncertainty, and evolving buyer behaviors reshape B2B marketing, organizations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable business outcomes. A new survey from Madison Logic, conducted by The Harris Poll, reveals that nearly half of B2B marketers admit they are uncertain about which marketing activities truly influence purchasing decisions, highlighting the growing demand for data-driven marketing strategies, attribution, and measurable ROI.
The survey, conducted among more than 300 U.S. decision-makers across marketing, advertising, communications, and social media, highlights a significant transformation in how organizations evaluate marketing success. While creativity remains important, marketers are increasingly expected to connect campaigns directly to revenue generation, pipeline growth, and measurable business outcomes.
According to the findings, 84% of respondents believe modern marketing extends beyond creative execution, with proving return on investment (ROI) becoming the industry's primary challenge.
The research indicates that uncertainty around purchasing behavior is driving greater investment in marketing intelligence, attribution, and intent data. Nearly half (48%) of respondents acknowledged that they often rely on guesswork when determining which marketing activities influence buying decisions.
To address this challenge, organizations are placing greater emphasis on connecting customer data, buying signals, and conversion insights to improve campaign optimization and resource allocation. Better visibility into buyer journeys is also becoming a strategic priority as purchasing decisions involve increasingly complex buying groups.
The survey found that 84% of marketers consider gaining deeper visibility into how buying groups engage across multiple channels to be a key business priority over the next year. Respondents also identified social media, display advertising, and audio as important investment channels for driving pipeline conversion.
These findings suggest that B2B organizations are moving toward integrated, data-driven marketing strategies that provide greater insight into customer engagement across the buying journey.
The report also revealed that 90% of respondents believe marketers who cannot clearly demonstrate business impact will face increasing difficulty defending budgets. At the same time, 91% agreed that successful modern marketing requires balancing data precision with human storytelling rather than choosing one over the other.
"Our industry is going through a significant reset…. The teams that win will be the ones that take the guesswork out of decision-making."
"When ROI is the standard everyone is being held to, guessing on channel mix and performance is a real problem. That’s why access to data and visibility matters more than ever."
As AI continues to reshape marketing operations and buyer expectations evolve, organizations are expected to invest further in analytics, attribution, and intent-based marketing technologies that help improve decision-making and demonstrate measurable business value.
