Zapier, the leading AI orchestration platform, has released findings from its AI Job Market survey of 550 corporate executives. The research highlights a stark contrast in today’s labor market: while overall hiring remains constrained, demand for AI expertise is surging, driving new role creation, competitive compensation, and long-term talent investments.
Despite broader economic headwinds, executives are not only prioritizing AI skills—they are actively competing to secure them. The survey underscores AI’s shift from a “nice-to-have” to a strategic imperative, with companies building dedicated teams, upskilling existing staff, and paying premiums to attract specialized talent.
The survey arrives amid one of the tightest hiring environments in recent years, yet AI expertise stands out as a clear bright spot. Companies are not just interested—they are investing heavily, creating roles that did not exist two years ago, and tying compensation directly to AI capabilities.
Generative AI proficiency and prompt engineering lead the list of in-demand skills, followed closely by data handling and foundational business competencies like communication and project management. This blend highlights that employers seek technical AI literacy paired with the ability to apply it effectively in real-world contexts.
“The broader job market is tough right now, and there’s no way around that. But the demand for AI skills is one of the clearest bright spots we’re seeing,” said Emily Mabie, Senior AI Automation Engineer at Zapier. “Companies aren’t treating AI as a nice-to-have anymore. They’re building entire teams around it, creating roles that didn’t exist two years ago, and putting real money behind it. If you’re investing in AI skills right now, you’re putting yourself in a much stronger position.”
While appetite for AI talent is strong, execution lags in some areas. One-third of executives plan to engage external consultants, and 14% are uncertain how to bridge skills gaps. These findings align with Zapier’s earlier AI Workslop survey, which showed workers without employer-provided AI training were six times more likely to report reduced productivity.
“The companies getting the most out of AI aren’t just hiring for it. They’re investing in training, building the right infrastructure, and connecting their tools so AI actually works across the business,” Mabie added. “You can have the most talented AI team in the world, but if your systems don’t talk to each other, you’re leaving a lot of value on the table.”
About the Survey
The survey was conducted by Centiment among 550 corporate executives. It included five core questions and 10 demographic questions. Data is unweighted, with a margin of error of approximately ±4% for the overall sample at a 95% confidence level.
