5W has released The Loyalty Premium 2026, a new research report examining how loyalty programs are reshaping growth strategies for consumer brands across retail, hospitality, dining, beauty and travel sectors. The study suggests that loyalty programs are increasingly becoming a primary revenue and acquisition driver as customer acquisition costs continue to rise and AI-driven discovery changes consumer behavior.
The report analyzes loyalty program performance across 200 consumer brands and outlines how organizations are using loyalty infrastructure, AI personalization and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to strengthen long-term customer relationships and revenue growth.
According to 5W’s findings, brands with mature loyalty ecosystems are seeing significantly higher repeat revenue contributions from loyalty members compared to previous years. The study reports that loyalty program members now account for 71% of repeat revenue among analyzed brands, compared to 54% in 2022.
At the same time, customer acquisition costs across retail, hospitality, beauty, dining and travel categories have reportedly increased by 67%, placing additional pressure on brands to maximize customer retention and lifetime value.
"For two decades the consumer marketing playbook was paid acquisition first, loyalty second," said Ronn Torossian, Founder and Chairman of 5W. "That playbook is broken. Paid social ROI is collapsing, AI search is replacing the discovery moment, and the brands winning right now are the ones that built durable loyalty infrastructure when nobody was watching. Loyalty is no longer a retention tool. It is the acquisition engine."
The report suggests that shifting consumer discovery patterns, including the rise of AI-powered search and recommendation systems, are accelerating the importance of loyalty-driven engagement strategies.
The Loyalty Premium 2026 identifies five operational and technology trends shaping the next phase of customer loyalty programs.
Brands are increasingly implementing tiered loyalty structures designed to encourage repeat engagement and increase customer lifetime value through status-based incentives and rewards.
The report highlights the growing adoption of subscription-style loyalty programs that offer premium benefits in exchange for recurring membership fees.
Consumer brands are leveraging AI-driven personalization to deliver targeted promotions, recommendations and incentives tailored to individual customer behavior and preferences.
Brands are also focusing on community engagement initiatives that encourage participation, advocacy and emotional connection beyond traditional transactional rewards.
The report identifies integration between loyalty data and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) as an emerging strategic priority. According to 5W, brands are beginning to align customer insights with AI-driven discovery platforms and answer engines.
5W’s research emphasizes how AI-driven search experiences are influencing brand visibility and customer acquisition strategies. The company stated that AI answer engines and recommendation systems are reducing the effectiveness of traditional paid acquisition models while increasing the value of trusted customer relationships and loyalty ecosystems.
The report forms part of 5W’s broader research initiative examining how artificial intelligence, GEO and evolving digital behavior are changing modern marketing and communications strategies.
The agency also noted its work in AI visibility research and Generative Engine Optimization, helping brands improve visibility across platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
As customer acquisition becomes increasingly expensive and fragmented, the report suggests that loyalty infrastructure is evolving into a long-term competitive advantage for consumer-facing brands.
