AI-powered search is reshaping how customers discover and evaluate businesses online. A new study from WebFX reveals that AI assistants are increasingly directing users to high-intent, decision-stage content rather than early-funnel informational pages, suggesting that AI is shortening the traditional buying journey and delivering visitors who are closer to making purchasing decisions.
WebFX has released findings from a study analyzing nearly 600,000 AI-generated website sessions across 2,500 web pages spanning businesses in more than 15 industries.
The research challenges the assumption that AI assistants primarily direct users to educational or awareness-stage content. Instead, the data indicates that AI platforms are guiding users toward pages designed to evaluate products, compare providers, and support purchasing decisions.
According to the study, AI search is compressing the traditional customer journey by enabling users to complete much of their research within AI platforms before visiting a company's website.
"For years, marketers have focused on attracting visitors at the top of the funnel," said Emily Carter, Senior Content Team Lead at WebFX. "Our research suggests AI search is changing where journeys begin, making decision-stage content more important than ever."
The research found that 92% of AI-driven sessions landed on consideration or decision-stage pages, while awareness-stage content attracted only 2.3% of total AI traffic.
Among all content categories, decision-stage pages performed the strongest, accounting for 55.3% of AI-generated visits. These pages typically help users compare providers, evaluate solutions, or make final purchasing decisions.
The findings suggest that AI assistants increasingly complete much of the early research process before directing users to business websites.
WebFX also reported that AI traffic demonstrates strong commercial intent.
Nearly 68.9% of AI sessions landed on transactional pages designed to encourage purchases or inquiries, compared with just 18% that reached purely informational content.
Rather than visiting multiple websites to compare products or services, users are increasingly relying on AI assistants to evaluate options before visiting a business's website to validate or finalize their decision.
The study further highlights the business value of AI-generated website visitors.
According to separate WebFX research, AI traffic converts at a rate 1.2 times higher than traditional organic search traffic, indicating that AI-assisted visitors often arrive with stronger purchase intent and greater readiness to take action.
These findings reinforce the growing importance of optimizing websites for AI search experiences alongside traditional SEO strategies.
As AI-powered search platforms continue evolving, businesses may increasingly benefit from creating authoritative, comparison-focused, and decision-stage content that aligns with how AI assistants recommend products and services during the buying process.
