KKR, a global investment firm, has finalized its acquisition of Metronet, a leading fiber-to-the-home provider, through a joint venture with T-Mobile, announced on July 24, 2025. This strategic partnership aims to accelerate fiber-optic network deployment across underserved U.S. markets, enhancing connectivity for homes and businesses.

Quick Intel

  • KKR and T-Mobile complete acquisition of Metronet for fiber expansion.
  • Metronet serves over 2.6M homes and businesses across 19 states.
  • Joint venture leverages T-Mobile’s 5G network and KKR’s infrastructure expertise.
  • Metronet becomes a wholesale ISP, with T-Mobile handling residential services.
  • Plans to reach 6.5M homes by 2030 with multi-gigabit internet.
  • KKR’s $31B digital infrastructure portfolio supports the deal.

Strategic Acquisition for Fiber Expansion

The acquisition merges Metronet’s robust broadband infrastructure with T-Mobile’s extensive 5G network, creating a platform to deliver high-speed fiber internet to underserved regions. Metronet currently provides multi-gigabit internet to over 2.6 million homes and businesses across 300+ communities in 19 states, spanning 42,000 miles of fiber-optic networks.

“Fiber is the connective tissue of the modern economy—from tele‑health and remote learning to AI‑powered enterprises,” said Waldemar Szlezak, Partner and Global Head of Digital Infrastructure at KKR. “For over 15 years, KKR has been a leader in the fiber space, delivering capital and capabilities to the world’s most critical networks.”

Joint Venture Structure

Under the joint venture, Metronet transitions to a wholesale internet services provider, while T-Mobile Fiber takes over residential customer operations, including acquisition, support, and experience. Metronet retains its commercial-services business and will focus on building and maintaining fiber-optic infrastructure. The partnership aims to reach 6.5 million homes by 2030, supported by KKR’s $31 billion digital infrastructure portfolio, which includes 12 fiber investments across 30 million homes globally.

Industry-Leading Fiber Growth

Metronet’s efficient fiber-construction model has made it the fastest-growing fiber-to-the-home provider in the U.S., recognized by PCMag as the nation’s fastest major ISP in 2023 and 2024. “Metronet has built the industry’s most efficient fiber‑construction engine, bringing world‑class digital infrastructure to underserved communities at an unprecedented pace,” said Dave Heimbach, Chief Executive Officer of Metronet.

Broader Impact

The collaboration leverages T-Mobile’s customer experience expertise and KKR’s global infrastructure strategy, which manages over $61 billion in assets, including 130,000+ wireless sites and data-center platforms. This acquisition builds on KKR’s prior investments in Metronet since 2021 and complements T-Mobile’s 5G Home Internet, serving over 5 million households. The deal positions both companies to meet growing demand for reliable, high-speed broadband, supporting applications like telehealth, remote learning, and AI-driven enterprises.

This joint venture marks a significant step in expanding fiber connectivity, enhancing digital infrastructure, and delivering value to communities across the U.S.
