New job postings for technology occupations reached a three-year high in April, according to the latest analysis by CompTIA. Employers across the economy added approximately 260,000 tech workers last month, bringing the total number of active job postings to over 575,000. This surge suggests that the hiring pressures felt throughout 2025 are beginning to ease as organizations solidify their AI strategies and accelerate digital transformation initiatives.

  • Postings Peak: 271,483 new tech job postings were listed in April—the highest in three years.

  • Employment Surge: Tech occupation employment across all sectors increased by 260,000.

  • Unemployment Drop: The unemployment rate for technology occupations fell to 3.5%.

  • Core Role Growth: Since January, active postings for systems engineers and architects have jumped 42.7%, while software developer roles rose 32.3%.

  • Experience Breakdown: 20% of postings targeted early-career professionals (0–3 years), while 45% sought mid-to-senior level talent (4+ years).

  • Geographic Hotspots: Washington D.C., New York City, and Philadelphia led the nation in new tech job volume increases.

Leading Tech Hubs by Monthly Increase
Major metropolitan areas showed significant momentum in April. Washington led with an increase of nearly 2,000 postings, followed closely by New York City and Philadelphia. Even traditional tech hubs like San Francisco saw a robust increase of 1,339 postings, signaling a broad geographic recovery in the tech labor market.

Drivers of the Hiring Resurgence

The rebound in tech hiring is largely attributed to employers moving beyond the planning phase of AI integration. As companies clarify how AI will fit into their operational models, there is a renewed focus on building a strong foundation of core technical skills.

"The factors that created pressure on tech occupations throughout 2025 appear to be easing," said Seth Robinson, Vice President of Industry Research at CompTIA. "The increase in job postings... confirms the need to build core tech skills as a foundation for more advanced capabilities."

Divergence in Tech Sector Employment

While tech occupations (tech roles in any industry) saw massive gains, tech industry employment (hiring specifically within tech companies) saw a modest decrease of about 6,300 jobs. Gains in IT services and software design were offset by reductions in telecommunications, cloud infrastructure, and data processing. This indicates that while specialized tech firms are streamlining, the broader economy—including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing—is aggressively absorbing tech talent.
