A new survey from Sonara, the AI-powered job search automation platform, reveals that AI has become deeply integrated into U.S. workplaces in 2026. Based on responses from over 3,000 U.S. workers, the AI in the Workplace Report shows that 77% of users report AI improves their job performance, with widespread employer approval and growing adoption signaling AI's shift from experimental to essential tool.

  • 70% of workers say employers allow AI use at work, with 37% actively encouraged; only 30% face restrictions.
  • 52% of workers currently use AI on the job, including 26% daily or weekly, while 27% are interested in starting.
  • 77% of AI users say it helps them perform better, primarily for writing/editing (69%), brainstorming (53%), and data analysis (29%).
  • 55% believe AI evaluated them in recent hiring or promotion processes, yet 60% are uncomfortable with AI in such decisions.
  • Only 29% feel their skills fully align with the future of work, highlighting skills anxiety as a key adoption driver.
  • Sonara's report underscores responsible AI use in hiring and work to maintain transparency and competitiveness.

Sonara's AI in the Workplace Report highlights how artificial intelligence has transitioned into a standard component of modern professional life for U.S. workers. With AI tools now widely permitted and often encouraged by employers, the survey captures a workforce increasingly relying on these technologies to enhance productivity and maintain relevance.

Employer policies reflect broad acceptance: 70% of respondents report that AI use is allowed at work, and 37% note active encouragement from leadership. Among the minority whose employers prohibit AI, a small portion (5%) admit to using it covertly. This permissive environment has fueled steady growth in adoption, with 52% of workers incorporating AI into their daily or occasional tasks.

Among those using AI, the impact is overwhelmingly positive. Seventy-seven percent say it enables them to perform their jobs more effectively, while only 5% report it makes work harder. Workers primarily leverage AI to augment core skills rather than replace them entirely, with the top applications including writing and editing (69%), idea generation and brainstorming (53%), data analysis or reporting (29%), design or image generation (21%), and note-taking (19%).

AI's role extends beyond day-to-day tasks into career progression. More than half of workers (55%) believe AI tools were involved in evaluating them during recent job applications or promotion reviews. Despite this, 60% express discomfort with AI influencing such high-stakes decisions, pointing to ongoing concerns about fairness and transparency.

Skills alignment remains a challenge: only 29% of workers feel their current abilities are fully prepared for the evolving job market, with 56% describing partial alignment and 14% reporting no alignment at all. This perceived gap appears to accelerate AI adoption as workers seek tools to bridge it and stay competitive.

Keith Spencer, Career Expert at Sonara, said: "In 2026, the question isn't if AI is being used but how. For companies, this means using AI responsibly and transparently in the hiring process. For workers and job seekers, it means communicating and leveraging AI responsibly in job applications and at work."

The findings illustrate AI's maturation as a productivity enhancer and decision-support tool across the workforce. As adoption continues to rise, the report emphasizes the importance of ethical guidelines, clear communication, and upskilling to ensure AI benefits both individual performance and organizational outcomes.
