Robert Half Survey: AI-Generated Resumes Delay Hiring by Weeks

Robert Half Survey: AI-Generated Resumes Delay Hiring by Weeks

A recent survey by global talent solutions firm Robert Half highlights a growing paradox in the labor market: while Artificial Intelligence has made applying for jobs easier for candidates, it has significantly complicated the identification of skilled talent for employers. The research reveals that 67% of U.S. HR leaders are experiencing slower hiring processes due to the influx of AI-generated applications, with 20% reporting delays of more than two weeks. This surge in unverified content is forcing companies to add manual verification steps, increasing both the cost and the risk of "mis-hires" in an already competitive talent landscape.

  • 67% of HR leaders report that AI-generated resumes have slowed down the hiring process.

  • 20% of organizations are seeing delays of two weeks or more.

  • 65% of hiring managers find it increasingly difficult to verify candidate skills due to application surges.

  • 84% of HR professionals report heavier workloads as a direct result of AI-driven application volume.

  • 38% of companies have increased the number of interviews per candidate to validate skills.

  • 67% of respondents are now turning to staffing firms to "cut through the noise" and pre-evaluate talent.

The Complexity of "AI Noise" in Recruitment

The rapid adoption of generative AI tools by job seekers has created a high-volume environment where applications are often embellished or entirely fabricated. This has forced 42% of hiring managers to spend significantly more time reviewing individual applications. Beyond just slowing down the workflow, the trend introduces a new layer of risk; 32% of companies have even resorted to rewriting job descriptions specifically to discourage generic, AI-generated responses.

"AI has transformed hiring at every stage," said Dawn Fay, operational president of Robert Half. "Companies are looking to hire, but a surge in unverified applications is extending timelines and delaying critical work."

Strategies to Mitigate AI-Driven Delays

To maintain hiring speed without sacrificing quality, organizations are adopting more rigorous human-centric validation methods. Key adjustments include:

  • Enhanced Interviewing: Increasing the touchpoints per candidate to verify "on-the-job" knowledge.

  • Targeted Assessments: Implementing specialized skills testing to bypass resume claims.

  • External Partnerships: Utilizing staffing firms that provide pre-evaluated talent backed by proprietary performance data.

According to the survey, 89% of leaders who use staffing partners find them effective in addressing these AI challenges. These firms leverage advanced verification tools and historical engagement data to ensure that a candidate's skills are authentic before they reach the hiring manager's desk.

"The findings underscore the continued importance of human expertise in assessing talent," Fay added. "AI has made it easier to generate applications, but it hasn't made it easier to identify the right talent. In many cases, it's doing the opposite."
