  • Lemon.io reports AI engineers now average $60/hr versus $44/hr for senior developers
  • Broad-scope AI engineers command rates as high as $79.20/hr
  • ML Engineers, MLOps Engineers and LLM Developers are emerging as specialized AI roles
  • Senior ML engineers can earn up to 43% more than standard senior-level peers
  • Lemon.io recommends phased AI hiring strategies for startups and early-stage companies
  • The report highlights growing demand for AI-assisted software development talent

AI Engineering Becomes One of Tech’s Highest-Paid Roles

Lemon.io’s report highlights how artificial intelligence has reshaped compensation structures within the software development industry.

According to the company, AI engineers capable of designing machine learning systems, deploying large language models and building AI infrastructure are now among the highest-paid technical specialists in the market.

The report found that broad-scope AI engineers currently earn up to $79.20 per hour, while traditional senior back-end developers average approximately $42.80 per hour.

Lemon.io noted that the AI talent market has also become increasingly segmented into specialized disciplines with distinct compensation ranges.

Specialized AI Roles Drive Salary Growth

The report identified several high-demand AI engineering specializations contributing to the widening pay gap across software development roles.

Machine Learning Engineers, responsible for training AI models and building learning systems, remain among the most difficult roles to fill. Lemon.io reported that “strong senior” ML engineers can command rates up to $77.20 per hour compared to approximately $54 per hour for standard senior-level ML talent.

Other specialized AI roles include:

  • MLOps Engineers managing AI infrastructure and deployment pipelines, earning between $38/hr and $62/hr
  • LLM Developers building workflows and applications on top of large language models, earning up to $58.70/hr
  • AI Generalists developing and scaling enterprise AI systems at rates approaching $80/hr

According to Lemon.io, the combination of software engineering, cloud infrastructure expertise and statistical modeling skills continues to create a significant supply shortage in the market.

Startups Advised to Follow Strategic AI Hiring Roadmaps

Lemon.io emphasized that startups and early-stage companies should carefully structure their AI hiring strategies to avoid unnecessary spending.

The company recommended a phased hiring roadmap beginning with Python and Django developers capable of handling foundational application and data pipeline work at lower cost ranges between $43/hr and $48.70/hr.

For companies integrating existing AI models into applications, Lemon.io suggested hiring LLM developers before investing in more expensive machine learning engineering talent.

The report stated that businesses should only hire dedicated ML engineers when building proprietary AI models or custom machine learning systems from scratch.

AI Hiring Demand Continues to Reshape Development Teams

Lemon.io believes the growing compensation gap reflects both rising enterprise AI adoption and a limited supply of experienced AI engineering talent.

The company also noted that AI-assisted developers are increasingly becoming a cost-efficient option for organizations prioritizing rapid development and product velocity over highly customized AI infrastructure.

According to Lemon.io, many early-stage businesses do not initially require senior AI architects or advanced ML specialists. Instead, aligning role requirements with product maturity can significantly improve hiring efficiency and budget optimization.
