A ResumeTemplates.com survey conducted in August 2025 reveals that 73% of 1,000 full-time U.S. workers who use AI chatbots weekly are increasingly reliant on these tools for basic tasks. The findings highlight a growing dependence on AI, raising concerns about diminishing skills among workers across industries.

Quick Intel

  • 73% of U.S. workers using AI chatbots weekly report reliance on the technology.

  • 25% struggle to write basic emails without AI assistance.

  • 49% find writing professional documents harder without AI support.

  • 21% say decision-making is more difficult without AI.

  • 78% of Gen Z and 75% of Millennials feel dependent on AI, compared to 67% of Gen X and 59% of Boomers.

  • 26% of reliant users want to reduce their AI usage to regain skills.

Growing AI Dependence in the Workplace

The survey underscores how AI chatbots, while boosting efficiency, are creating challenges for workers who rely on them for routine tasks.

Difficulty with Professional Writing

Nearly half (49%) of respondents report that writing professional documents is more challenging without AI. This reliance on AI tools for drafting reports, proposals, or other work-related documents suggests a potential erosion of independent writing skills.

Struggles with Email Communication

A quarter of respondents (25%) admit they struggle to write basic emails without AI assistance. This dependency highlights how AI tools are becoming integral to daily communication tasks in professional settings.

Impact on Critical Thinking and Decision-Making

The survey reveals that 46% of workers find it harder to fact-check or critically evaluate information without AI, while 21% note that decision-making has become more difficult. These findings indicate that over-reliance on AI may weaken cognitive skills critical for workplace success.

Generational Differences in AI Reliance

Younger workers report higher dependence on AI tools. Specifically, 78% of Gen Z and 75% of Millennials feel reliant on AI, compared to 67% of Gen X and 59% of Boomers. Among those who feel dependent, 26% express a desire to scale back AI usage to rebuild their confidence and skills.

Worker Perspectives on AI Dependence

Respondents shared candid insights into their struggles with AI reliance:

  • "Thinking for myself has become impossible."

  • "I can't write a document I'm satisfied with without AI."

  • "AI has reduced my critical thinking skills."

"AI can be a powerful support tool, but leaning on it too heavily risks diminishing your skills and confidence," says Julia Toothacre, Chief Career Strategist at ResumeTemplates.com.

The survey, conducted via Pollfish in August 2025, highlights the need for workers to balance AI use with skill development to maintain professional competency. As AI continues to shape workplaces, addressing this dependency will be critical for long-term career success.
