Resume.org, the leading platform for building resumes, has released new findings from a March 2026 survey of 991 U.S. hiring managers. The research reveals that 57% of hiring managers view employees with strong creative thinking, communication, and storytelling skills as more valuable than those with strong technical skills like coding, compared to only 26% who prioritize technical abilities.

This shift highlights how advancing AI capabilities are reshaping employer priorities, particularly as automation handles more routine technical tasks. Additionally, 57% of hiring managers believe creative employees are harder to replace with AI—nearly double the 31% who said the same for technical workers.

  • 57% of U.S. hiring managers value creative thinking, communication, and storytelling over technical skills like coding.
  • Only 26% prefer strong technical skills; creative skills seen as harder for AI to replace (57% vs. 31% for technical).
  • Coding perceived as less valuable today than five years ago by 14% of managers—highest decline among surveyed skills.
  • AI tool proficiency tops rising value (81%), followed by strategic thinking (73%), creative thinking (68%), and communication/storytelling (64%).
  • Creative skills most valued in financial services (66%) and technology (65%), with notable emphasis in education, government, and manufacturing.
  • 34% of companies laid off creative employees in 2026 due to AI, yet 39% increased hiring for creative roles and 48% are upskilling creative teams.

The survey indicates a rebalancing of talent priorities rather than outright replacement of creative functions. While some organizations have reduced creative headcount amid AI adoption, more are expanding or investing in these roles to leverage human strengths alongside technology.

When asked why creative employees hold greater value, 76% of favoring managers cited the difficulty of replicating these skills with AI or automation. Additional reasons include greater contributions to strategy and decision-making (72%), ability to translate complex ideas into clear narratives (69%), and refining AI-generated content (51%).

"The value of coding skills is shifting because AI can now perform many technical tasks faster and at scale," says Kara Dennison, Head of Career Advising at Resume.org. "At the same time, creative thinking, communication, and storytelling are becoming more valuable because they help organizations interpret, guide, and apply AI effectively. Professionals who can combine technical literacy with the ability to think creatively about problems and translate complex ideas into meaningful decisions will stand out the most in the workplace."

These insights point to an evolving job market where hybrid capabilities—technical awareness paired with irreplaceable human creativity—emerge as a key differentiator. Employers increasingly seek talent that can direct AI outputs, craft compelling strategies, and communicate effectively in an AI-augmented environment.
