Nuvei, the global fintech building infrastructure for every payment, everywhere, has completed a live agentic-commerce proof of concept in collaboration with Visa, Arvato Systems, and fashion brand Kings and Priests. The demonstration showcased a transaction where an AI agent initiated and completed a purchase on behalf of a shopper, with the payment executed entirely within the agent environment. The experiment signals a shift toward agent-driven commerce, where AI systems not only recommend products but also execute payments within governed boundaries.

Advancing from digital commerce to agent-driven transactions

The proof of concept marks a transition in digital commerce from product discovery to full transaction execution by AI agents. In this model, the AI does not simply recommend items but can initiate and complete purchases within a controlled environment.

The transaction was executed using tokenized Visa credentials through Visa Intelligent Commerce, with payments settled on live card networks. Multiple issuing banks across Europe participated in the flow, demonstrating interoperability across existing financial infrastructure while maintaining governance and control mechanisms defined by the user.

Payments completed inside the AI agent environment

A key outcome of the demonstration was that the entire payment flow — from product selection to authorization and settlement — occurred inside the first-party AI agent. This eliminates the need for users to transition to external checkout pages or traditional payment interfaces.

The process was governed by predefined shopper controls, including spending limits and approved purchase categories. These guardrails ensure that AI-driven transactions remain aligned with user intent while maintaining financial safety and compliance standards.

Building interoperable agentic payment infrastructure

Nuvei’s vision for agentic commerce centers on creating a protocol-agnostic execution layer that enables any AI agent to initiate payments across different systems and networks. The proof of concept represents an early step toward this infrastructure model.

The collaboration brought together Arvato Systems for merchant technology integration, Kings and Priests as the participating brand, and multiple issuing banks including Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, Bank Leumi, CAL, MAX, and Bank of Cyprus. This multi-party setup demonstrated end-to-end interoperability across the payment ecosystem.

Visa Intelligent Commerce enables tokenized AI payments

Visa’s Intelligent Commerce framework played a central role in enabling secure, tokenized transactions initiated by AI agents. Tokenization ensured that sensitive payment credentials were protected while still allowing real-time authorization and settlement on existing card rails.

According to Visa, the initiative builds on existing capabilities such as tokenization and network-level controls, extending them to support AI-driven purchasing while maintaining trust, transparency, and authentication standards.

Merchant perspective on AI-driven purchasing

From the merchant side, the proof of concept demonstrated how AI agents could open new digital commerce channels. By allowing agents to initiate purchases on behalf of users, brands gain a new interaction layer that extends beyond traditional browsing and checkout flows.

The participating fashion brand highlighted the potential for AI agents to reshape discovery and purchasing behavior, enabling more automated and personalized retail experiences.

Toward a scalable agentic payments ecosystem

Nuvei and its partners are now working toward scaling the concept into production-ready infrastructure. The broader vision includes enabling agentic payments across merchants, protocols, and networks through a unified execution layer.

The company also outlined two foundational components: a protocol compatibility layer that supports multiple agent communication standards, and a “Know Your Agent” framework that verifies, scores, and governs AI agents acting on behalf of users. These systems aim to ensure transparency, accountability, and security in AI-driven financial interactions.

Industry outlook and projected growth of agentic commerce

Industry forecasts cited in the announcement suggest that agentic commerce could represent $1 trillion in global transaction volume by 2030, potentially growing to $3–5 trillion by 2035. This reflects growing expectations that AI will become a direct participant in commerce, not just a recommendation layer.

Nuvei positions its agentic payments initiative as part of its broader strategy to enable “Every Payment, Everywhere,” extending its infrastructure to support emerging AI-native transaction models.

Preparing for production-scale deployment

The initial rollout of Nuvei’s agentic payments infrastructure is targeted for the second half of 2026. Planned capabilities include protocol compatibility, agent identity and risk scoring, network certifications, and developer tooling for integration.

The system is designed to run on Nuvei’s existing PCI-certified infrastructure, which already supports risk management, fraud prevention, and large-scale merchant payment processing across global markets.

Defining the next layer of digital payments infrastructure

The proof of concept highlights a broader shift toward embedding payments directly within AI systems. Instead of treating payments as a separate checkout step, the emerging model positions them as an integrated function within autonomous agents.

By combining tokenized credentials, network-level controls, and agent governance frameworks, Nuvei and Visa are laying the groundwork for a new category of commerce infrastructure where AI systems can securely initiate and complete transactions on behalf of users.
