The Celo Foundation has announced the launch of Nightfall, an open-source, zero-knowledge privacy layer developed by EY and released into the public domain as a Layer 3 on the Celo network. This marks the first payments-focused blockchain integration of Nightfall, enabling private, enterprise-grade transactions that combine confidentiality with public blockchain benefits, positioning Celo as a leader in B2B payments amid $180T+ cross-border flows.

Quick Intel

  • Nightfall_4 (NF_4) supports private transfers of ERC-20, ERC-721, ERC-1155, and ERC-3525 tokens via ZK-ZK rollups.
  • Reduces transaction costs to 1/10th of standard transfers; eliminates intermediaries for scalable, auditable privacy.
  • Live on Celo testnet; technical docs at EYBlockchain/nightfall_4_CE on GitHub.
  • Celo: 500K+ DAU, $2B+ monthly stablecoin volume, 150+ countries; excels in emerging markets like Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.
  • MiniPay wallet: 10M+ activations, 270M+ transactions; supports USDT, USDC as gas with fee abstraction.
  • Ecosystem includes Aave, Uniswap V3, Curve, Velodrome, Chainlink; launched 2020 for inclusive finance.

Enabling Private Enterprise Payments

Nightfall addresses enterprise needs for confidential B2B transactions, supply chain finance, and high-value use cases, bridging privacy with blockchain's transparency and low costs. Developed since 2017, NF_4 bundles transactions for efficiency, maintaining scalability without sacrificing security. "Deploying Nightfall on Celo brings enterprise-grade privacy to the same mobile-first infrastructure that already supports millions of users globally," said Rene Reinsberg, Celo Co-Founder and Celo Foundation President. "With this Layer 3, Celo now offers a comprehensive solution for both individual and institutional payment needs in markets underserved by traditional financial infrastructure."

Celo's Strategic Positioning

Celo's phone number-based addressing, sub-cent fees, and dominance in on-chain P2P payments make it ideal for global, inclusive finance. With 1,000+ projects, it fosters prosperity through stablecoins like native USDT/USDC and Mento assets (cUSD, cEUR, cREAL, eXOF). Nightfall enhances this for enterprises, supporting gas abstraction in ERC-20 tokens for seamless adoption.

Celo's Nightfall integration pioneers privacy in payments, empowering underserved regions and institutions with secure, efficient blockchain solutions for a more equitable financial future.

About Celo

Celo is an Ethereum Layer-2 and mobile-first blockchain network built for the real world and designed for fast, low-cost payments worldwide. The Celo ecosystem consists of a decentralized, proof-of-stake blockchain technology stack, the CELO native token, USDC and USDT (both enabled as gas currencies), several Mento stable assets (cUSD, cEUR, cREAL, eXOF), and popular infrastructure including Aave, Uniswap V3, Curve, Velodrome, and Chainlink. Launched on Earth Day in 2020, the open-source Celo mainnet supports a rich ecosystem of projects (1,000+) contributing to Celo's global mission of prosperity for all.
