Blackbaud Expands AI Agents for Social Impact Organizations

Blackbaud continues advancing its AI strategy by introducing new Agents for Good, digital AI teammates embedded directly within its social impact platform.

The expansion builds on the Development Agent, which enables fundraising teams to automate donor engagement workflows while maintaining human oversight. Rather than functioning as standalone AI tools, the agents are integrated into Blackbaud's existing applications to reduce data silos, improve security, and simplify adoption.

Four New AI Agents Join the Agents for Good Suite

Blackbaud announced four additional AI agents scheduled for release in the coming month, extending automation across multiple organizational functions.

The new agents include:

  • Data Health Agent – Automatically identifies duplicate records, updates constituent information, and improves fundraising database quality.
  • Admissions Agent – Helps independent K–12 schools guide prospective families through admissions with personalized support and more complete applications.
  • Digital Marketing Agent – Assists organizations with audience selection, campaign planning, content creation, and real-time marketing optimization.
  • Accounts Payable Agent – Automates payment processing within Financial Edge NXT®, reducing manual work and improving operational efficiency for finance teams.

Together, these AI agents aim to increase organizational capacity without requiring additional staff resources.

Development Agent Delivers Early Results

According to Blackbaud, early customer adoption of the Development Agent has demonstrated measurable fundraising improvements.

The AI agent automatically identifies potential and inactive donors outside major gift portfolios and executes personalized, multi-touch engagement campaigns under human supervision.

Reported results include:

  • Reply rates 76 times higher than the industry average.
  • Message open rates 10 percentage points higher than the industry average.
  • Attributable gift sizes 39% larger than industry benchmarks.

"We're using the Development Agent to accelerate donor connections and make those connections more impactful in a shorter period," said Brian Otis, vice president for university advancement at the University of New Haven. "This will help us accelerate fundraising across all levels."

AI Enhancements for Financial Edge NXT

In addition to expanding its AI agent portfolio, Blackbaud announced several AI-powered capabilities for Financial Edge NXT.

New enhancements include:

  • AI Document Intelligence to automatically process invoices and receipts while reducing manual data entry.
  • Import Mapping Assistant to simplify budget and financial data imports by automatically matching fields.
  • AI Anomaly Detection & Reconciliation Assistants to continuously monitor financial transactions for duplicate payments, unusual activity, errors, and potential fraud.

These capabilities are designed to streamline finance operations while maintaining human oversight during review and approval processes.

Advancing Trusted AI Adoption

Blackbaud emphasized that its AI platform combines industry-specific data, embedded governance, and purpose-built workflows to improve both AI effectiveness and organizational trust.

The company also highlighted findings from the Blackbaud Institute, which indicate that AI adoption is growing across the social impact sector. However, many organizations continue to face challenges translating AI usage into measurable operational outcomes.

To support responsible AI adoption, Blackbaud recently launched the free AI for Social Impact Certification Program through the AI Coalition for Social Impact, providing product-agnostic training for nonprofits and other mission-driven organizations.

Leadership Perspective

"The solutions we're delivering today have been trusted by our customers for decades, but we've now completely rebuilt them under the surface to transform what's possible—especially with AI agents," said Mike Gianoni, president, CEO and vice chairman of the board of directors of Blackbaud. "We are connecting every product and learning from every interaction with AI that gets smarter over time. We're giving customers greater clarity on what to do next, more capacity to take action, and the confidence to leverage intelligent systems without sacrificing human judgment. There is no more powerful AI engine for social impact than Blackbaud."

Blackbaud plans to unveil additional details about its reimagined connected operating system and future AI innovations during bbcon 2026, taking place from September 29 to October 1 in Columbus, Ohio.
