Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and NatWest have become among the first banks globally to adopt Swift's Framewrk for enhanced international consumer payments. The initiative is designed to improve the speed, predictability, and transparency of cross-border retail payments, enabling consumers and small businesses to benefit from a more seamless international money transfer experience. Built on Swift's global payments innovation (gpi) foundation, the framework introduces standardized service levels, upfront pricing, and end-to-end payment tracking.
Swift's new framework represents a significant expansion of its payment modernization strategy by bringing enhanced cross-border payment capabilities to retail customers. While Swift's existing services have largely focused on financial institutions and corporate transactions, the new framework is designed specifically to improve the experience for individuals and small businesses sending or receiving international payments.
The participating UK banks will be among the first financial institutions to introduce the new standards, helping establish a more consistent global experience for cross-border consumer transactions.
The new framework introduces several enhancements intended to reduce uncertainty associated with international money transfers. Customers will benefit from:
These improvements are designed to make international transfers function more like domestic payments by providing greater certainty around timing, costs, and delivery.
The initiative is expected to particularly benefit consumers sending remittances, individuals receiving international payments, and small businesses conducting cross-border transactions. By introducing standardized operating rules across participating banks, Swift aims to improve consistency while reducing friction in international retail payments.
The framework also supports financial institutions in delivering a more reliable customer experience without requiring fundamental changes to existing banking relationships.
Adam Bealey, Chief Executive for UK & Ireland at Swift, said: "This framework represents an important step forward for the UK payments ecosystem."
International retail payments have traditionally lacked the speed and transparency available in many domestic payment systems. Swift's new framework seeks to close that gap by establishing consistent standards that participating banks can adopt globally, improving customer confidence in international transactions while supporting the evolving needs of consumers and businesses.
The early adoption by Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and NatWest demonstrates growing industry momentum toward delivering faster, more transparent cross-border payment experiences through collaborative global banking standards.
