Nutanix has announced at Microsoft Ignite 2025 that its Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) will support Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) for hybrid deployments. This integration allows organizations to run AVD sessions on premises using the Nutanix AHV hypervisor, combining on-premises performance with Azure management and scalability.

Quick Intel

  • Enables Azure Virtual Desktop to run on Nutanix AHV for hybrid VDI deployments.
  • Supports Azure brokering and management via Azure Arc–enabled servers.
  • Addresses data residency and sovereignty needs in regulated industries.
  • Optimizes for Microsoft 365, Teams, Entra, and security services.
  • Provides hybrid flexibility for burst capacity and disaster recovery.
  • Currently under development with no specific release date announced.

Meeting Hybrid Workforce and Compliance Needs

Distributed workforces and regulatory requirements drive demand for flexible virtual desktop solutions. Running AVD on Nutanix AHV enables organizations to maintain local control over sensitive data while leveraging Azure's cloud-native management, brokering, and security features.

This approach suits industries such as financial services, healthcare, and government, where data sovereignty and compliance are critical.

Key Benefits of the Integration

The collaboration delivers several advantages:

  • Hybrid flexibility combining on-premises latency performance with Azure scalability for peak loads and disaster recovery.
  • Native support for Microsoft applications, including Microsoft 365, Teams optimizations, and Entra identity services.
  • Optimized performance for latency-sensitive and graphics-intensive workloads.
  • Cost efficiency through existing Microsoft licensing and Nutanix infrastructure investments.

This extends VDI options without requiring a full cloud migration, supporting consistent operations across environments.

Leadership Perspectives on the Collaboration

Tarkan Maner, Chief Commercial Officer at Nutanix, stated: “The Nutanix Cloud Platform delivers a performant, resilient, cost-efficient, and secure infrastructure base for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) workloads. This collaboration with Microsoft will empower our customers with more options for virtual desktops, whether they’re modernizing on premises or extending into hybrid cloud environments.”

Scott Manchester, Vice President of product for Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop at Microsoft, added: “Azure Virtual Desktop is built to deliver a secured, scalable, and deeply integrated experience with Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, and Windows. Nutanix support for Azure Virtual Desktop will give customers more choice, whether they deploy in the cloud or on premises—without compromising on the modern security model or licensing efficiencies.”

This integration expands Nutanix’s hybrid capabilities and provides organizations with greater choice in VDI deployment models.
