HPE, Partners Form Quantum Scaling Alliance for Computing

The journey toward practical quantum computing is gaining a coordinated, industry-wide effort. HPE, in collaboration with seven other leading technology organizations, has announced the formation of the Quantum Scaling Alliance, a global consortium dedicated to making quantum computing scalable and transformative for real-world industry applications by leveraging existing supercomputing and semiconductor ecosystems.

A Consortium for Scalable Quantum Systems

The Alliance was formed to address the multifaceted challenge of scaling quantum technology. It brings together cross-functional expertise from founding members including Applied Materials for semiconductor fabrication, Synopsys for EDA tools, Riverlane for quantum error correction, and Quantum Machines for system control. The consortium's mission is to bridge the gap from proof-of-principle demonstrations to solving practical, industry-sized problems in areas like materials science and drug discovery.

Integrating Quantum with Classical Supercomputing

A core principle of the Alliance is that quantum computers will not operate in isolation but must be integrated with classical high-performance computing (HPC) systems. HPE's role involves leading the full-stack quantum-HPC integration to create hybrid solutions. This convergence is seen as essential for tackling complex simulations and unlocking new frontiers in scientific and enterprise innovation.

“Quantum computers hold the key to transforming industries through their unique ability to tackle intrinsically quantum problems,” said John Martinis, co-lead of the Alliance and 2025 Nobel Laureate. “By harnessing quantum systems, we can achieve breakthroughs in areas ranging from semiconductor manufacturing to sustainable fertilizer production—solving challenges previously thought insurmountable.”

A Full-Stack, Collaborative Approach

The Alliance represents a shift from vertically integrated, single-company efforts to a horizontally integrated partnership model. By uniting leaders across the compute stack—from materials engineering and qubit design to error correction and algorithm development—the consortium believes it can unlock potential that is unachievable by any single entity alone.

“For quantum to succeed as a viable long-term computing paradigm, it must scale by integrating with classical supercomputing systems,” said Dr. Masoud Mohseni, a distinguished technologist at HPE. “The Quantum Scaling Alliance is offering a full-stack solution—a large partnership with horizontal integration that unlocks compute potential that is otherwise unachievable through a vertical approach.”

The formation of the Quantum Scaling Alliance marks a significant step in the maturation of the quantum computing industry. By pooling the resources and expertise of established leaders from adjacent fields, the consortium aims to systematically address the engineering and scalability challenges that have thus far prevented quantum computing from achieving mainstream practical utility.
