Elastic Eases OpenTelemetry SDK Management at Scale

Elastic Eases OpenTelemetry SDK Management at Scale

Managing thousands of OpenTelemetry SDKs across distributed systems is a significant operational hurdle for development and observability teams. To address this, Elastic has unveiled new capabilities within its Elastic Distribution of OpenTelemetry (EDOT) SDK that streamline centralized configuration and management, alongside introducing official support for the PHP programming language.

Quick Intel

  • Elastic's OpenTelemetry distribution now simplifies centralized SDK management and updates at scale.

  • New OpAmp protocol support eliminates the bottleneck of manually managing thousands of SDKs.

  • The update reduces operational friction, ensuring SDK consistency across all services.

  • Elastic is contributing auto-instrumentation and native OS package support to the OTel PHP SDK.

  • This enhances open observability for one of the world's most popular programming languages.

  • The move is part of Elastic's 2025 focus on solving core observability ingestion and management challenges.

Centralized Management with OpAmp

The accelerating adoption of OpenTelemetry often leads to complexity in keeping SDKs updated and consistent across numerous services. Elastic tackles this directly by integrating support for the Open Agent Management Protocol (OpAmp) into its EDOT SDK. This allows teams to configure, manage, and update their instrumentation centrally, dramatically reducing manual overhead.

Baha Azarmi, general manager of Elastic Observability, stated, “OTel users have been waiting for an easy, reliable way to centrally manage their SDKs at scale. By extending OpAmp support through our EDOT SDK, we’re making open observability more accessible and dramatically reducing the operational friction that comes with scaling it.” The EDOT SDK and collector help organizations standardize the collection of traces, metrics, and logs, leading to simplified pipelines and faster insights.

Expanding Language Support with PHP

In a demonstration of its commitment to the open-source ecosystem, Elastic is contributing key features to the OpenTelemetry PHP SDK. This contribution brings critical capabilities like auto-instrumentation and native OS package support to PHP, vastly improving the observability experience for a massive segment of the developer community.

A Year of Observability Innovation

These announcements are the latest in a series of 2025 innovations from Elastic Observability aimed at core data management challenges. The foundation was set with the general availability of the production-ready EDOT, followed by a managed OTLP endpoint that removes the need to manage collectors. The EDOT Cloud Forwarder further simplified cloud observability by providing an easy on-ramp for data from AWS and Azure.

Elastic's latest enhancements to its OpenTelemetry distribution represent a significant step forward in making enterprise-scale observability more manageable. By solving the practical problems of SDK management and expanding language support, Elastic is lowering the barrier to entry for robust, open-source-based monitoring.
