NordLocker Unveils Project Renaissance Encrypted Storage Upgrade

NordLocker has announced Project Renaissance, the most significant architectural upgrade in the platform's history. The overhaul introduces a new journaling-based storage engine that replaces the traditional locker-based architecture, delivering faster encrypted file management, improved scalability, enhanced sharing capabilities, and a foundation for future security innovations, including post-quantum cryptography readiness.

Quick Intel

  • NordLocker launches Project Renaissance with a new journaling-based encrypted storage architecture.
  • The upgrade delivers over 10x faster uploads and downloads and more than 100x faster complex file operations.
  • Users can now organize files without mandatory lockers and share files or folders at any level.
  • All NordLocker applications have been rebuilt around the new core engine.
  • The new architecture maintains end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge security.
  • The update is rolling out across Web, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS platforms.

NordLocker Rebuilds Its Encrypted Storage Architecture

Project Renaissance marks a complete redesign of NordLocker's underlying infrastructure. Rather than relying on the previous locker-based file tree, the platform now uses a journaling approach that records every file change as an individual encrypted event.

According to NordLocker, the previous architecture required reloading and re-encrypting an entire locker whenever a single file changed, resulting in slower performance as encrypted libraries grew. The new model removes that limitation by processing only the modified data, allowing file operations to remain fast regardless of storage size.

“Project Renaissance is a major technological leap for NordLocker, from the new core engine and reworked surrounding services to a new generation of apps. The biggest gains are in performance, speed, file management, and sharing. By removing the old locker-based limitations, we made NordLocker significantly faster, more flexible, and much better equipped for future development.” Aivaras Vencevičius, Head of Product at NordLocker

New Journaling Engine Improves Performance and Scalability

At the core of Project Renaissance is a newly developed journaling engine that replaces monolithic encrypted storage blocks with an append-only log of individually encrypted events.

Each modification is cryptographically linked to previous entries, creating an immutable chain while preserving NordLocker's zero-knowledge encryption model. Files continue to be encrypted locally on users' devices before being uploaded to NordLocker's infrastructure.

The company states that this architecture significantly improves performance, with upload and download speeds exceeding 10x improvements and complex file operations becoming more than 100x faster, particularly for large libraries containing thousands of files.

More Flexible File Organization and Secure Sharing

The upgrade also removes one of NordLocker's longstanding usability limitations by eliminating the requirement to create lockers before storing files. Users can now upload files directly to the root directory and organize content freely without predefined folder structures.

Sharing capabilities have also been expanded. Users can securely share individual files or folders at any directory level through email or secure links rather than being limited to locker-level sharing.

The platform introduces Viewer and Editor permissions for collaborators, while link sharing now includes optional security codes and customizable expiration dates, giving users greater control over access to shared encrypted content.

Enhanced Mobile Experience and Future-Ready Security

As part of Project Renaissance, NordLocker has redesigned its iOS and Android applications with an updated interface, Dark Mode support, improved transfer visibility, and performance enhancements powered by the new storage engine.

Beyond immediate performance improvements, the new architecture is designed to support upcoming capabilities such as cloud trash recovery and photo synchronization while maintaining the platform's end-to-end encrypted and zero-knowledge framework.

NordLocker also confirmed that the redesigned architecture prepares the platform for the future adoption of post-quantum cryptographic standards by isolating quantum-sensitive cryptography into a dedicated layer. While post-quantum algorithms have not yet been activated, the company says the foundation is in place for future implementation once industry standards mature.

Availability

Project Renaissance is currently rolling out across all NordLocker platforms. Existing users will receive the upgrade automatically as it becomes available.
