Enterprise data resilience is a critical priority as organizations increasingly rely on cloud productivity suites. CrashPlan, a specialist in backup and recovery for Microsoft 365, has announced a significant deepening of its strategic collaboration with Microsoft. This expanded partnership includes new joint go-to-market initiatives, enhanced SharePoint Archiving capabilities, and plans for the co-development of scalable AI-search to help enterprises fortify their data protection strategies.

  • CrashPlan deepens its strategic collaboration with Microsoft.

  • The partnership includes co-marketing, co-selling, and co-development.

  • New SharePoint Archiving capability helps reduce storage costs.

  • CrashPlan and Microsoft are co-developing scalable AI-search for backup data.

  • The solution is built on Azure and deeply integrated with Microsoft 365.

  • It addresses data resilience across Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams.

A Unified Approach to Microsoft 365 Data Resilience

CrashPlan's platform is built entirely on Microsoft Azure and integrates natively with Microsoft 365, providing comprehensive data protection for Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Unlike legacy tools adapted for the cloud, CrashPlan was purpose-built for modern, cloud-scale environments. This deep integration delivers a unified experience for IT teams, safeguarding data across SaaS applications, endpoints, and servers while being available through the Microsoft Marketplace and contributing to Azure consumption commitments.

Tackling Storage Costs with Intelligent Archiving

A key outcome of the expanded collaboration is the introduction of Microsoft 365 Archiving within the CrashPlan platform. As data volumes in Microsoft 365 explode, enterprises face rising storage costs and compliance complexity. CrashPlan's SharePoint Archiving automatically moves inactive data to cost-effective secondary storage while maintaining user access through file stubs. By combining this with deduplication, compression, and incremental backup, organizations can significantly lower storage expenses without compromising on recoverability or compliance.

Future-Proofing with AI and Joint Innovation

Looking ahead, CrashPlan and Microsoft are exploring the co-development of AI-search capabilities to unlock insights from backup data at scale, addressing common database scalability challenges. A proof of concept for this AI-search, along with the new archiving features, will be showcased at Microsoft Ignite 2025. The partnership will also be highlighted in a joint session focused on optimizing backup costs with Azure.

Randy De Meno, VP of Business Development and Microsoft Practice at CrashPlan, stated, “CrashPlan’s mission has always been to make data protection simple, secure, and cost-effective. Deepening our collaboration with Microsoft allows us to bring that vision to even more organizations, combining innovation, scale, and trusted collaboration to help customers achieve true data resilience.”

This strengthened alliance provides enterprises with a robust, Azure-native path to comprehensive data protection, combining CrashPlan's specialized expertise with the global scale and innovation of Microsoft.
