US employers continued expanding their technology workforces in May as demand for skilled tech professionals remained strong across industries, according to the latest analysis from CompTIA based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. The report highlights continued hiring momentum for technology occupations, particularly in cloud infrastructure, software services, cybersecurity, and AI-related functions.
CompTIA’s findings also indicate a decline in unemployment among tech professionals, reinforcing the ongoing need for specialized technology talent across the U.S. economy.
CompTIA’s analysis shows that technology occupation employment grew by 69,000 workers in May, reflecting sustained hiring demand across multiple sectors. Tech occupation employment includes technology professionals working not only within the tech industry itself but also across industries increasingly dependent on digital infrastructure and software-driven operations.
The report estimates that approximately 5.9 million individuals are currently employed in technology occupations throughout the United States.
Additionally, tech industry employment specifically increased by roughly 6,700 jobs during the month. Hiring gains were led by organizations operating in cloud infrastructure, data processing and hosting, IT services, and custom software systems design.
CompTIA’s data revealed nearly 587,000 active job postings for technology occupations in May, including close to 269,000 newly added listings during the month. The number of new postings increased by approximately 4,000 compared to April.
By hiring volume, employers showed the strongest demand for software developers and engineers, systems engineers and architects, cybersecurity engineers and analysts, and technical support specialists.
The report also noted significant month-over-month growth in hiring demand for web developers, search engine optimization specialists, and telecommunications engineering specialists.
"More than ever, business success relies on technology," said Seth Robinson, vice president, industry research, CompTIA. "Our research has shown a desire to build capability in core operational functions, which then allows companies to build advanced practices in AI, data and cybersecurity."
Technology job openings remained geographically widespread, though the highest concentration of opportunities was recorded in major metropolitan markets including New York, Washington, and Dallas.
The continued growth in technology hiring reflects how businesses across sectors are increasing investments in digital transformation, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and AI-enabled operational capabilities.
As organizations modernize operations and strengthen technical capabilities, demand for skilled technology professionals continues to remain a critical component of workforce planning strategies nationwide.
