A key advancement is the initial support for post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms for mTLS, which secures control plane communications against future cryptographic threats. The update also brings general availability for Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security 4.9 and enhances security data management tools. Furthermore, features like bring-your-own OpenID Connect offer greater identity management flexibility, while the External Secrets Operator simplifies the lifecycle management of external secrets.
Red Hat OpenShift 4.20 introduces capabilities to streamline the deployment and management of complex AI workloads. The LeaderWorkerSet (LWS) API simplifies the orchestration of large, distributed AI training jobs. For faster deployment, the Image volume source feature allows new AI models to be integrated in minutes without rebuilding application containers, dramatically reducing the time from development to production.
The platform continues to unify container and virtual machine management. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization now includes CPU load-aware rebalancing for improved performance and Arm support for broader architecture compatibility. Expanded hybrid cloud support now includes bare-metal deployments on Oracle Cloud, giving organizations more control over their infrastructure and data placement. Enhanced storage offloading also significantly accelerates VM migration from legacy systems.
