iCOUNTER, launched by Apollo Information Systems Corp., introduces a new category of cyber risk intelligence focused on defending against highly targeted, AI-enabled cyber-attacks. Led by cybersecurity veteran John Watters, the company has secured $30 million in Series A funding from SYN Ventures. Since 2020, iCOUNTER has protected U.S. customers across SLED, SMB, and enterprise sectors, preventing losses worth hundreds of millions by countering threats from nation-states, ransom groups, and other malicious actors.
The rise of AI-enabled attackers has transformed cyber threats, with adversaries using AI to conduct rapid reconnaissance and exploit specific security gaps. These attackers create "zero-day TTPs" (tactics, techniques, and procedures) tailored to individual targets. iCOUNTER’s technology empowers organizations to detect, deflect, and defeat these customized attacks. “We are in the dawn of a new era of cybersecurity,” said John Watters, CEO and Managing Partner of iCOUNTER. “Traditional methods will increasingly fail, and defenders will be forced to reimagine their defenses against a flood of targeted operations that leverage AI to generate new and novel TTPs.”
John Watters, a cybersecurity pioneer with over two decades of experience, leads iCOUNTER. Previously President and COO of Mandiant, Watters guided the company through its sale to FireEye and acquisition by Google. His expertise drives iCOUNTER’s mission to redefine cybersecurity. “iCOUNTER has built the only intelligence capability exclusively focused on countering targeted attacks,” said Jay Leek, Managing Partner and Founder of SYN Ventures. This unique approach positions iCOUNTER to address the evolving threat landscape.
iCOUNTER’s strategy of delivering tailored threat intelligence to address specific vulnerabilities has garnered industry support. “The strategy of providing dedicated threat intelligence to address threats mapped against individual companies’ specific gaps and vulnerabilities is a service that is desperately needed,” said Chris Kissel, Research Director in IDC’s Security and Trust Products Group. The company’s focus on precision intelligence is expected to be critical for sensitive organizations.
iCOUNTER’s launch marks a significant step in cybersecurity, offering organizations the tools to combat AI-driven threats with precision and scale, ensuring robust protection in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
