The partnership introduces ABB’s HiPerGuard Medium Voltage Static Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), a first-of-its-kind technology. Unlike traditional low voltage systems, HiPerGuard supports scalable 25 MW block expansions with fewer parts and cabling, enhancing reliability and simplifying installation. “What we are building with ABB is going to completely change the way our industry designs large-scale data centers,” said Todd Gale, Chief Development Officer at Applied Digital. This reduces conversion losses and heat, optimizing energy efficiency for AI workloads.
AI data centers require significantly higher power density than traditional setups. ABB’s HiPerGuard UPS addresses this by increasing power density and reducing electrical plant footprints. “Partnerships like this are accelerating the timeline for AI-ready data centers with more competitive, resilient power infrastructures,” said Massimiliano Cifalitti, Smart Power President at ABB Electrification. The technology supports large-scale facilities across North America and Europe, driving efficiency for AI and high-performance computing.
The 400 MW North Dakota campus is designed for scalability and sustainability, with access to over 1 gigawatt of power capacity under evaluation. The region’s energy-efficient climate, combined with ABB’s technology, ensures reliable hosting for AI factories and blockchain applications. This infrastructure supports long-term growth in the AI data center ecosystem.
The collaboration covers the full design and development of the site’s electrical infrastructure, optimized for resilience and efficiency. Applied Digital’s purpose-built facilities, paired with ABB’s global production capacity, enable rapid deployment. Initial orders in Q4 2024 and Q1 2025 mark the start of a transformative partnership for AI infrastructure.
By combining ABB’s advanced UPS technology with Applied Digital’s innovative data center design, this partnership sets a new benchmark for AI-ready infrastructure. It delivers scalable, reliable, and sustainable solutions, enabling businesses to meet the demands of AI, blockchain, and high-performance computing effectively.
