Files.com, a leading platform for secure and automated file transfer, announced its acquisition of ExpanDrive on July 24, 2025. As part of the deal, ExpanDrive, a desktop application that mounts cloud and remote storage as local drives, is now free for personal use under a new freemium pricing model, expanding access to multi-cloud environments for individuals and small teams.
ExpanDrive, founded in 2004, enables users to mount cloud platforms and remote servers—such as SFTP, Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive—directly into native file explorers on macOS, Windows, and Linux, without requiring syncing or separate transfers. This provides a seamless, local-drive-like experience, simplifying file management across multiple cloud services. “ExpanDrive offers a beautifully simple way to access remote storage right from your desktop,” said Kevin Bombino, CEO of Files.com.
Under the new freemium model, ExpanDrive is:
This model makes ExpanDrive accessible to a broader audience while supporting Files.com’s enterprise-grade offerings for scalability and compliance.
The acquisition enhances Files.com’s mission to unify secure file access, automation, and management. ExpanDrive’s technology will drive future innovations, complementing Files.com’s platform, which serves over 4,000 organizations with features like enterprise-grade security, direct cloud integrations, and automation for system-to-system workflows. The integration aims to provide a cohesive experience for users managing files across desktop and enterprise environments.
ExpanDrive’s ability to connect cloud storage to native file systems without syncing reduces local storage demands, making it ideal for users with limited disk space or those working offline. Its support for versioning, multi-user file locking, and server-side search further enhances its utility for developers, creatives, and small teams. For enterprises, Files.com builds on these capabilities with advanced automation, compliance tools, and centralized control, ensuring scalability for larger organizations.
Prior to the acquisition, ExpanDrive faced user-reported issues in early 2024, including unresponsive support and functionality problems, particularly on Linux. Files.com’s takeover and the freemium relaunch aim to address these concerns, with optional paid support available to ensure reliability. Legacy licenses from pre-2024 versions are no longer supported, but users who purchased within 12 months of the April 2025 relaunch are eligible for refunds.
This acquisition positions Files.com to lead in multi-cloud file management, offering a free, user-friendly tool for individuals while scaling enterprise solutions for secure, automated file transfers.
