Commvault, a leader in cyber resilience and data protection for hybrid cloud environments, has launched Clumio Backtrack for Amazon DynamoDB, a solution designed to streamline recovery for one of the most widely used cloud-native NoSQL databases. This offering addresses critical recovery challenges for high-scale, latency-sensitive applications, enhancing resilience and reducing operational costs.

Quick Intel

  • Clumio Backtrack enables near-instant DynamoDB table rollback and partition-level recovery.

  • Supports AI-driven, e-commerce, and mobile apps with minimal downtime.

  • Uses an “incremental forever” backup model to lower costs compared to full backups.

  • Available globally via AWS Marketplace with consumption-based pricing.

  • Follows Clumio Backtrack for Amazon S3, expanding AWS recovery solutions.

  • Reduces recovery times from days to minutes, minimizing operational overhead.

Transforming DynamoDB Recovery

Amazon DynamoDB powers high-performance applications like real-time personalization engines, e-commerce platforms, and AI-driven services due to its scalability and low-latency operations. However, its complex architecture, with tables containing multiple partitions, poses recovery challenges, often requiring full-table restores that are slow and costly. Clumio Backtrack for DynamoDB enables near-instant rollback to a prior point in time without reconfiguration, allowing recovery of individual partitions rather than entire tables. “Organizations are building their next-generation cloud and AI applications on DynamoDB,” said Woon Jung, Chief Technology Officer, Cloud Native at Commvault. “Clumio Backtrack removes the friction and risk from database recovery.”

This solution leverages an “incremental forever” backup model, reducing recovery times and costs compared to native options that rely on full backups. For example, a global language learning app with 150 TB of DynamoDB data cut backup costs by 70% and increased retention from 7 to 30 daily copies using Clumio, saving over $1 million annually.

Industry Impact and Validation

The solution addresses the growing need for data resilience in cloud-native environments. “Amazon DynamoDB remains a critical cloud-native NoSQL database in production, thanks to major improvements across consistency, cost and performance. Amid rising data resilience and availability imperatives, precise, point-in-time recovery for DynamoDB is a significant advancement,” said Archana Venkatraman, Senior Research Director, Cloud Data Management at IDC. By enabling granular recovery, Clumio Backtrack minimizes downtime and operational risks, critical for agile development and AI-driven workloads.

Building on the earlier launch of Clumio Backtrack for Amazon S3, which automates object-level recovery, this DynamoDB solution strengthens Commvault’s portfolio for AWS customers. Available globally through the AWS Marketplace with consumption-based pricing, it offers flexibility and scalability for organizations managing complex datasets.

Strategic Context and Market Position

Commvault’s launch follows its acquisition of Clumio in October 2024, enhancing its cloud-native data protection capabilities. The company, with a market cap of $7.43 billion and 18.63% revenue growth over the past year, continues to innovate in cyber resilience, as seen with partnerships like Kyndryl for incident recovery. Clumio Backtrack’s air-gapped, immutable backups and serverless architecture ensure robust protection against cyberattacks and errors, positioning Commvault as a leader in cloud data management.
