Amazon’s AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region, launched on September 2, 2025, introduces three Availability Zones to provide robust cloud infrastructure. This development enables developers, startups, enterprises, and organizations in sectors like finance, retail, education, and government to run applications with lower latency and store data locally. “The new AWS Region in New Zealand will help serve the growing demand for cloud services across the country and empower organizations of all sizes to accelerate their digital transformation,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS.
Amazon’s investment of over NZ$7.5 billion will support the construction, operation, and maintenance of data centers, significantly boosting New Zealand’s economy. The initiative is projected to contribute NZ$10.8 billion to the country’s GDP and create over 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually in fields like engineering and telecommunications. “The launch of the AWS Region in New Zealand is an exciting moment. This investment in digital infrastructure and Amazon’s commitment to digital skills can accelerate New Zealand technology businesses and help New Zealanders to move into highly skilled, secure, and well-paid technology jobs,” said Graeme Muller, CEO at NZTech.
Aligned with Amazon’s commitment to net-zero carbon by 2040 through The Climate Pledge, the new AWS Region is powered by renewable energy from day one via a partnership with Mercury NZ’s Turitea South wind farm. AWS’s infrastructure is up to 4.1 times more energy-efficient than on-premises solutions, potentially reducing carbon footprints by up to 99% when optimized, according to an Accenture report. This collaboration underscores how digitalization and decarbonization can advance together for a sustainable future.
Amazon is fostering digital skills in New Zealand through a Memorandum of Understanding with the government, aiming to train 100,000 individuals in cloud skills, with over 50,000 already trained via programs like AWS Academy and AWS Skill Builder. The region’s launch also supports clients like Kiwibank, Xero, and TVNZ, offering advanced technologies such as AI, machine learning, and analytics to drive innovation and meet data residency needs.
The AWS Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region strengthens the country’s position as a technology hub in the Asia Pacific. Amazon’s investment, focus on sustainability, and commitment to digital skills development pave the way for enhanced innovation, economic growth, and global connectivity.
