Enterprises across North America are progressing toward autonomous operations, with Agentic AI playing a pivotal role in transforming IT from a cost center to a driver of measurable business value, according to new research from Digitate. The study, "Agentic AI and the Future of Enterprise IT," reveals near-universal AI adoption, growing trust, and validated ROI, positioning IT as a foundational component of the autonomous enterprise.
Digitate research shows 45% of enterprises are semi- to fully autonomous today, projected to hit 74% by 2030.
The median ROI from AI implementations is $175M on a $71.6M spend.
ITOps is the leading area for AI adoption (78%) and perceived benefit (65%).
Generative AI is the most widely deployed model (74%), but Agentic AI is already in use (44%).
Organizations use an average of five AI tools, and 94% consider AI trustworthy.
AI is seen as augmenting human work, with only 25% expecting job replacement.
The 2025 study, surveying 600 IT decision-makers in the U.S. and Canada, builds on Digitate's previous research to track a three-year trajectory of enterprise AI maturity. Findings indicate that what began as a drive for efficiency has evolved into a strategy delivering clear ROI and strategic value. North American organizations lead in ROI and scale, while European counterparts excel in governance, illustrating complementary paths to maturity.
IT operations remains the primary domain for AI success, with 78% of organizations deploying AI in ITOps and 65% seeing the greatest benefits there. While nearly half (46%) still view IT as a cost center today, this perception is expected to shift toward profit generation within 2-3 years. The research shows a direct link between scale and strategic value, with high-investment enterprises reporting the greatest returns.
The research underscores a collaborative mindset, with Agentic AI seen as changing essential tasks (52%) and enabling departmental reorganization (53%) while enhancing human work. Major near-term use cases for AI agents include cost optimization (65%) and proactive issue management (55%). Crucially, only 25% of respondents foresee job replacement, with 62% expecting Agentic AI to assist new functions. “AI maturity is accelerating the shift to the autonomous enterprise, enabling effective human-AI collaboration,” commented Avi Bhagtani, CMO of Digitate.
Despite optimism, the study reveals persistent challenges, creating a "strategy-execution gap." While 94% of organizations cite drawbacks like the need for human intervention (47%) and implementation costs (42%), 96% also face adoption obstacles, primarily a lack of technical skills (33%). A key paradox emerges: organizations deploy AI to reduce costs and complexity, yet their dependency on skilled human input and the rising cost of technology remain limiting factors.
The research forecasts a clear future trajectory, with nearly three-quarters of enterprises expecting to be semi- or fully autonomous by 2030. Success metrics are evolving from uptime and cost reduction to profitability, resilience, and innovation velocity. Achieving this will hinge on continued investment in upskilling, system integration, and responsible AI governance.
Digitate's research provides a data-backed view of the accelerating enterprise AI journey. By demonstrating tangible ROI, high trust levels, and the strategic rise of ITOps through AI, the findings validate the shift toward autonomous operations. However, the path forward requires balancing automation with augmentation, addressing skill gaps, and managing costs to fully realize the promise of Agentic AI in creating self-healing, value-generating IT environments.
About the Report
Conducted by Sapio Research in September-October 2025, the study surveyed 600 IT decision-makers across the U.S. and Canada from enterprises with 1,000+ employees that have implemented AI in the past two years. The findings are accurate to ±4% at the 95% confidence level. This 2025 edition follows Digitate's prior North American (2023) and Europe (2024) surveys, forming a longitudinal dataset on enterprise AI evolution.
