WP Engine has released its AI Agency Trends Report, which examines how AI is transforming web design and development. The report highlights how digital agencies are adapting their practices to build websites for both humans and AI agents, signaling a significant shift in the digital agency model.
The Intelligent Web is redefining digital experiences by serving a dual audience of humans and AI agents. This shift is pushing digital agencies to adapt quickly, creating opportunities for those who lead while widening the gap for slower adopters.
“The Intelligent Web is without a doubt rewriting the rules of the digital economy to accommodate a dual audience of both humans and AI agents. While it’s creating massive opportunities, it’s also introducing profound complexity and ambiguity, and some anxiety for agencies to stay competitive,” said WP Engine’s Vice President of AI Products, Thierry Muller. “The most mature and invested agencies that lead in AI-centric thinking and work will have an opportunity to foster trust and boost their credibility early in this new era.”
Eighty-five percent of agencies strongly agree that AI web optimization practices are now as pivotal to client success as mobile-responsive design was in the 2010s. Over 70% of agencies report having already adjusted their web development and design approaches to accommodate building AI-friendly websites.
Agencies show varying levels of AI adoption, with 26% identifying as advanced or experts compared to 15% as beginners. While most agencies remain primarily human-first in their design focus, nearly half (45%) are beginning to give equal priority to both human users and AI systems. Only 3% prioritize AI systems above human users.
Client demand is a key driver, with 68% of clients initiating AI discussions. Agencies are increasingly expected to provide strategic AI planning and consultation.
The speed of AI innovation and evolving AI web design trends represent the top challenge for 41% of agencies. This outpaces other concerns such as client demand or lack of in-house expertise.
“As a digital-first agency at the intersection of creativity and technology, it’s no longer just about creating beautiful experiences for people. It’s about building intelligent, adaptable platforms and structuring content in ways AI agents can understand and act on,” said Chief Technology Officer David DiCamillo at Code and Theory. “The findings in this report confirm what we’ve already been experiencing. AI isn’t a future trend. It’s now. Agencies that start building for the Intelligent Web will be the ones that help their clients stay ahead of what comes next.”
Ninety-nine percent of surveyed agencies have taken at least one concrete step toward AI integration, such as staff training, policy development, or tool investments, reflecting a broad industry shift.
The report surveyed 214 web agency professionals and underscores that agencies adapting to the Intelligent Web early will be better positioned to support client success in the evolving digital landscape.
