AAMVA DLDV Verifies Against DMV Database Without Storing ID Image vs Traditional Scanners

On September 1, 2026, Krebs on Security reported that service operating on dark web began selling photographs of more than 153 million driver's licenses from United States and Canada, along with roughly 10 million identification cards and 3 million passports and travel documents. Krebs verified samples by searching database for his own records and those of other individuals who consented to checks, and tracked leak to IDScan. Media reports suggest multiple lawsuits already filed against IDScan and law firms launched investigations into potential class-action litigation related to reported security incident at IDScan.

While traditional ID scanners check for security features on physical card, and in many cases store image of card, Trust Stamp AAMVA DLDV service allows customers to confirm in real time that information on ID matches DMV database without storing image of ID. This secondary layer of verification provides heightened level of privacy protection while addressing high-end sophisticated forgeries that can bypass standard optical scans.

Gareth N Genner, CEO of Trust Stamp, commented, "Trust Stamp has always been committed to providing Privacy Enhancing Technologies PETS and our AAMVA DLDV service provides accessible, government-backed identity trust across physical and digital worlds without compromising end-user security by storing images of their identity documents. As soon as leak was announced we determined what would be needed to defend our clients against malevolent use of data and developed measures we can quickly implement to protect financial institutions from fraud risk and potential legal liability from continued use of flawed legacy systems."
