Oracle has officially announced the general availability of Java 26 (Oracle JDK 26) during the JavaOne 2026 conference in Redwood Shores, CA. This latest release introduces significant advancements aimed at boosting developer productivity, particularly in the realms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and security. Beyond the language updates, Oracle unveiled the Java Verified Portfolio (JVP), a curated collection of Oracle-supported tools and frameworks designed to reduce supply chain risk and streamline enterprise development. This release also marks the reintroduction of commercial support for JavaFX and a strategic alignment of the Helidon microservices framework with the core Java release cadence.

Quick Intel

  • Java 26 Availability: Delivers thousands of improvements focused on AI integration, performance, and simplified coding patterns.

  • Java Verified Portfolio (JVP): A new offering providing curated, Oracle-supported tools including JavaFX, Helidon, and the Java Platform Extension for VS Code.

  • AI & Cryptography Focus: New APIs for lazy constants and PEM encoding streamline AI inferencing and secure application setup.

  • Helidon Alignment: Oracle's microservices framework, Helidon, will now align its release cadence with JDK roadmaps and has been proposed as an OpenJDK project.

  • JavaFX Commercial Support: Reintroduced to meet high demand for AI-driven visualizations and interactive analytics.

  • Infrastructure Efficiency: JEP 522 (G1 GC) and JEP 516 (Ahead-of-Time Object Caching) focus on reducing startup times and increasing throughput.

Key JDK Enhancement Proposals (JEPs)

Java 26 introduces 10 primary JEPs across language features, performance, and libraries:

  • Language & AI: JEP 530 (Primitive Types in Patterns) simplifies AI inferencing code by making pattern matching more expressive. JEP 526 (Lazy Constants) offers performance benefits for data-driven applications by treating unmodifiable data as true constants.

  • Performance: JEP 522 improves throughput for the G1 Garbage Collector by reducing thread synchronization, while JEP 516 (Project Leyden) accelerates application startup via AOT object caching.

  • Networking & Concurrency: JEP 517 adds HTTP/3 support to the HTTP Client API for lower latency, and JEP 525 continues to refine Structured Concurrency to make multithreaded AI workloads more resilient.

  • Security: JEP 500 prepares to make final fields truly immutable by default, and JEP 524 introduces a new API for PEM encoding of cryptographic objects to simplify compliance.

Strengthening the Ecosystem: Java Verified Portfolio (JVP)

The introduction of the Java Verified Portfolio addresses the enterprise need for a trusted software supply chain. JVP provides Java SE subscribers and OCI customers with fully supported versions of essential ecosystem components.

"With the introduction of JVP, developers can streamline their development projects using a trusted collection of Oracle-supported tools, including Helidon, which is a fast, lightweight Java framework for building high performance microservices and AI-enabled applications," said Georges Saab, Senior Vice President, Oracle Java Platform.

By sourcing these assets directly from Oracle, organizations can ensure that their frameworks and libraries meet the same rigorous security and quality standards as the JDK itself.

Innovation in the Cloud and Community

Oracle JDK 26 is immediately supported on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), where Java SE and advanced management features are provided at no additional charge. This release is the result of extensive collaboration within the OpenJDK community and the Java Community Process (JCP), ensuring that the language continues to evolve as the backbone of modern mission-critical systems.

"The platform's continuous evolution enables organizations to incorporate transformative capabilities into their applications, while preserving the reliability and security that define mission-critical software," noted Arnal Dayaratna, Research Vice President at IDC.
