OpenAI and Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) announced a long-term collaboration to deploy 10 gigawatts of OpenAI-designed AI accelerators and network systems. These systems will integrate Broadcom’s Ethernet-based connectivity technologies, designed for scale-up and scale-out AI clusters. The joint effort targets initial deployments starting in the second half of 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2029.
The initiative builds on OpenAI’s ongoing investment in custom chip design to integrate deep learning insights directly into hardware. By doing so, OpenAI aims to achieve higher efficiency, scalability, and performance in AI workloads across its facilities and partner data centers.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, emphasized the significance of the collaboration:
“Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses. Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI to provide benefits to all humanity.”
Echoing this sentiment, Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom Inc., noted:
“Broadcom’s collaboration with OpenAI signifies a pivotal moment in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence. OpenAI has been in the forefront of the AI revolution since the ChatGPT moment, and we are thrilled to co-develop and deploy 10 gigawatts of next-generation accelerators and network systems to pave the way for the future of AI.”
OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman added:
“Our collaboration with Broadcom will power breakthroughs in AI and bring the technology’s full potential closer to reality. By building our own chip, we can embed what we’ve learned from creating frontier models and products directly into the hardware, unlocking new levels of capability and intelligence.”
Charlie Kawwas, Ph.D., President of the Semiconductor Solutions Group at Broadcom, highlighted the technical strengths of the partnership:
“Our partnership with OpenAI continues to set new industry benchmarks for the design and deployment of open, scalable and power-efficient AI clusters. Custom accelerators combine remarkably well with standards-based Ethernet scale-up and scale-out networking solutions to provide cost and performance optimized next-generation AI infrastructure.”
This collaboration not only enhances Broadcom’s leadership in AI infrastructure but also underscores the growing importance of Ethernet technology in powering large-scale AI data centers. OpenAI’s expanding user base—now exceeding 800 million weekly active users—further reinforces the need for next-generation infrastructure capable of supporting global enterprise and developer adoption.
Together, OpenAI and Broadcom aim to deliver scalable, efficient, and intelligent AI systems that move closer to realizing the potential of artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity.
