Nutanix, a leader in hybrid multicloud computing, has released the eighth annual Enterprise Cloud Index (ECI) survey and report. The findings highlight how the rapid rise of AI is driving infrastructure modernization, particularly container adoption, while introducing new challenges from organizational silos, shadow IT, and readiness gaps.

Quick Intel

  • 85% of IT executives report that AI is accelerating container adoption to improve speed, reliability, and scalability for modern applications.
  • 87% expect container usage for applications to increase over the next three years, with 83% already building new applications in containers.
  • Organizational silos hinder AI execution, with 82% of respondents saying silos between business units and IT slow deployment and increase complexity.
  • Shadow IT poses significant risks, as 79% encounter unauthorized AI applications or agents deployed by non-IT functions, and 87% view this as introducing exposure of sensitive data and IP.
  • AI agents hold strong potential: 61% expect improved customer/employee experiences, 58% anticipate productivity gains, and 57% see opportunities for new products, services, or revenue streams.
  • Data sovereignty remains critical, with 80% prioritizing it in infrastructure decisions and 57% preferring to run infrastructure within a single country for security and compliance reasons.
  • While 59% anticipate more than five AI-enabled applications in the next three years, 82% say their on-premises infrastructure is not fully ready to support AI workloads.

AI as the Key Driver of Containerization

Containers have become foundational to enterprise application strategies, enabling efficient, scalable deployment of AI-enabled workloads. The ECI survey shows strong momentum, with AI acting as the primary accelerator for container adoption. Organizations are shifting toward containerized environments to support faster development cycles and modern application needs.

“The findings indicate organizations need enterprise-grade security, resilience, and portability as AI workloads can run anywhere,” said Lee Caswell, SVP, Product and Solutions Marketing at Nutanix. “Organizations would also benefit from a common operating environment for virtual machines and containers that enables their IT leaders to scale AI confidently across hybrid environments.”

Emerging Challenges: Silos, Shadow IT, and Readiness Gaps

While AI drives innovation, it also introduces operational and security risks. Silos between IT and business units create friction, delaying initiatives and complicating governance. Shadow IT—unauthorized AI deployments by non-IT teams—exacerbates these issues, heightening risks around data exposure, compliance, and intellectual property.

Data sovereignty concerns remain non-negotiable, influencing where organizations host infrastructure and workloads. Many prefer single-country deployments, whether on-premises or via local cloud regions, to meet security and regulatory requirements.

Despite top-down directives to deploy AI applications, infrastructure readiness lags. A majority of respondents anticipate multiple AI-enabled applications soon, yet most view current on-premises setups as insufficient for full support.

Optimism Around AI Agents and Future Potential

IT executives express strong confidence in AI agents to deliver value. Expectations include enhanced experiences, productivity improvements, and even the creation of new revenue streams. These insights underscore the strategic importance of preparing infrastructure to support agentic AI safely and at scale.

The eighth annual ECI report was conducted in November 2025 by Wakefield Research, surveying 1,600 cloud, IT, and engineering executives (manager level and above) from organizations with 500+ employees across 14 countries: Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
