New Study: Professionals Say AI Is Reshaping Research Hiring Roles

AI is already changing research hiring. In a unitQ study of 160 research, design and insights professionals, 42% said AI had reduced or slowed hiring or contributed to roles going unfilled. Announced from San Francisco, 28% said early-career researchers will feel impact before anyone else, and more than half pointed to execution-heavy work as first thing to be handed off.

Expertise Drought as Execution Layer Automated First

Rather than replacing researchers outright, AI is automating executional layer first — running interviews, transcribing, coding open-ended responses — hands-on work that early-career researchers typically cut their teeth on. One respondent called result an "expertise drought": automate that apprenticeship today, and team may stop producing seasoned researchers without noticing until they're gone.

There's quality dimension too. AI is letting more teams run more research, faster — but greater volume does not guarantee greater insight. Among research and insights professionals, 40% warned of deskilling or shallow, homogenized output, kind of 'research slop' that falls apart under scrutiny. Speed without judgment, several respondents cautioned, produces confident answers that are wrong.

"The obvious headline is that AI augments a researcher's work. The more accurate one is that it also quietly removes the rungs of the ladder they climb," said Christian Wiklund, Co-founder and CEO at unitQ. "That's avoidable, but only if teams get real tools to hand the executional work to, instead of just cutting the roles that used to do it."

Study also points to where value goes. Among research and insights professionals, 51% said people who thrive alongside AI are ones fluent enough to direct it and recognize when it's wrong. That describes judgment researchers have always been hired for, now separated from manual work that used to fill days.

Adaptive AI Interviews at Scale

unitQ conducted study using unitQ Research, AI research platform for teams. Tool that represents AI moving into research work was pointed at question of whether AI is coming for research work, and method was published alongside finding. unitQ Research runs adaptive AI interviews and surveys — by text, voice, or video, in 30+ languages participant chooses — with survey rigor underneath, including screening, quotas, and branching. It synthesizes themes, sentiment, quotes, and root causes moment study closes, giving any team depth of qualitative interview at speed and reach of survey.

"Research has always forced a trade between depth and reach," said Wiklund. "Human interviews tell you why and cost too much to run at scale. Surveys reach everyone and only capture what you already knew to ask. This is a real conversation thousands of people can have at once."
