Lumus, a leader in reflective (geometric) waveguide technology for augmented reality (AR) eyewear, announced an expanded partnership with Quanta Computer Inc., a global manufacturing giant, to enhance the mass manufacturability of its optical engines. This collaboration strengthens Lumus’ supply chain and supports the growing $2.54 billion AR glasses market, projected to reach $5.77 billion by 2031.

  • Partnership: Lumus and Quanta enhance waveguide production

  • Technology: Reflective waveguides with automated manufacturing

  • Impact: Higher yields, thinner designs, 55,000+ waveguides shipped

  • Market: Supports $2.54B AR glasses market, 12.6% CAGR

  • Goal: Scalable, cost-effective AR optical engines for OEMs

Scaling AR with Reflective Waveguides

Lumus’ reflective waveguides, known for 10x better luminance efficiency and outdoor suitability, are now supported by Quanta’s dedicated, automated production lines. “One of the most persistent misconceptions about geometric waveguides is that they are inherently difficult to manufacture at scale,” said Ari Grobman, CEO of Lumus. The partnership has enabled higher-yield, cost-effective production of compact waveguides, with over 55,000 units shipped to date.

Quanta’s Manufacturing Innovation

Quanta’s investment in tailored production lines and automation reduces complexity and costs for OEMs. “Our investment in automation and dedicated optical engine lines reflects our confidence in the scalability of geometric waveguides,” said C.C. Leung, Vice Chairman of Quanta. This unified infrastructure supports all Lumus field-of-view variants, accelerating next-generation AR glasses development without retooling.

Industry Context

The partnership aligns with the AR market’s growth, driven by demand for lightweight, high-performance glasses. Lumus’ Z-30 and Z-50 optical engines, showcased at AWE 2025, offer 30° and 50° fields of view, respectively, with battery efficiency 10x higher than competitors. Posts on X note excitement for Lumus’ 70° FOV prototype, rivaling Meta’s Orion, using cost-effective glass.

Strategic Impact

By streamlining production, Lumus and Quanta enable OEMs to meet rising consumer demand, with AR glasses adoption projected to grow 12.6% annually. The partnership supports applications like the Holochip H50 for U.S. Navy maintenance, leveraging Lumus’ superior color fidelity and brightness. This positions Lumus to lead in consumer and enterprise AR solutions.

About Lumus

Lumus reflective (geometric) waveguides set an industry benchmark for AR image quality. Far brighter than other solutions, Lumus is the only waveguide ideally suited for outdoor usage. With up to 10X better luminance efficiency over competing waveguides and supply chain partners like Quanta Computer Inc. and SCHOTT, Lumus is the leading choice for OEMs making AR glasses. Lumus waveguide technology provides unparalleled color uniformity and a true white due to the straight-forward light path inherent in its architecture.

Other key advantages: a smaller micro-projector, a large field-of-view, and a distortion-free view of the real world. Remarkably, battery efficiency is up to 10 times greater than any other waveguide on the market, and forward light leakage (forward projection) is inherently negligible.

Lumus' manufacturing processes, supported by its world-class supply chain partners, including Quanta Computer Inc. and SCHOTT, enable scalability for mass manufacturing. The company is the leading designer of geometric waveguide technology at the core of several AR products, including Thales' Scorpion full-color head-mounted display, Augmedics' xVision system for guiding surgeons, Lenovo's ThinkReality A6 released in 2019 as well as MediThinQ's ScopeEye® and MetaScope®.
