The partnership between Instructure and OpenAI embeds advanced AI technology into Canvas LMS, enabling educators to create LLM workflows directly within the platform. This first-of-its-kind integration, announced on July 23, 2025, in Salt Lake City and San Francisco, enhances Instructure’s IgniteAI ecosystem, connecting with over 1,100 edtech partners to deliver a future-ready learning environment.
The flagship feature, LLM-Enabled Assignment, allows educators to design custom GPT-like experiences within Canvas. “This new type of assignment allows students to have rich, casual and interactive conversations in a ChatGPT-like environment they already know they love,” said Shiren Vijiasingam, chief product officer at Instructure. Teachers can set learning objectives and track evidence, fostering personalized learning while maintaining educational integrity.
