IBM and AMD announced a multi-year collaboration with Zyphra, an open-source AI research company, to deliver advanced AI infrastructure on IBM Cloud. This agreement provides Zyphra with one of the largest generative AI training clusters using AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs, enabling development of multimodal foundation models for its Maia superagent.
Zyphra, based in San Francisco, will use the cluster to train multimodal foundation models, focusing on language, vision, and audio. This supports Maia, a general-purpose superagent for knowledge workers in enterprises. "This collaboration marks the first time AMD's full-stack training platform has been successfully integrated and scaled on IBM Cloud," said Krithik Puthalath, CEO and Chairman of Zyphra. The setup includes AMD Pensando Pollara 400 AI NICs and Ortano DPUs for enhanced performance and efficiency.
The deal extends IBM and AMD's 2024 collaboration to deploy MI300X accelerators on IBM Cloud, known for security and scalability. IBM's hybrid cloud complements AMD's high-performance computing, optimizing power efficiency for AI and HPC. "Scaling AI workloads faster and more efficiently is a key differentiator," said Alan Peacock, GM of IBM Cloud. AMD's EVP Philip Guido added, "By combining IBM enterprise cloud expertise with AMD leadership in high-performance computing and AI acceleration, we are supporting Zyphra's pioneering work."
This infrastructure advances quantum-centric supercomputing plans between IBM and AMD, blending quantum and AI for future innovations. Zyphra's focus on open-source architectures, long-term memory, and continual learning aligns with enterprise needs for scalable, cost-effective AI. The cluster will accelerate Zyphra's roadmap, enabling faster time-to-results and maximized GPU utilization.
IBM and AMD's partnership with Zyphra exemplifies collaborative AI infrastructure, empowering open-source innovation to deliver real-world enterprise value through efficient, scalable training capabilities.
