Google Workspace has released findings from its second-annual “Young Leaders” survey, conducted by The Harris Poll, revealing that the next generation of leaders views personalized AI as the new standard for workplace productivity tools. Based on responses from over 1,000 U.S. knowledge workers aged 22-39 who hold or aspire to leadership roles, the study highlights a clear demand for AI that adapts to individual writing styles, organizational brand guidelines, and contextual data from emails, documents, and meetings.
Young leaders overwhelmingly reject generic AI outputs. They expect tools that understand their personal communication style, incorporate relevant context from Gmail, Drive, Meet notes, and other Workspace data, and align with company brand guidelines—transforming AI from a basic assistant into a true extension of the individual.
"The era of one-size-fits-all AI is over," said Yulie Kwon Kim, Vice President of Product, Google Workspace. "Our research shows that personalized AI is no longer a nice-to-have—it's the baseline expectation for rising leaders who rely on AI at work."
The survey positions young professionals as active shapers of AI rather than passive users. They are building custom workflows, collaborating with AI agents (88% of agent users see them as partners), and demanding greater customization options to match their unique needs.
"Young leaders are writing the playbooks for AI in the workplace," Kwon Kim said. "Instead of simply accepting this technology with a one-size-fits-all mindset, they're designing curated workflows and collaborating with agents to drive value for their unique needs."
Beyond productivity, AI is emerging as a powerful professional development tool. Young leaders use it as a thought partner (92% find it valuable for feedback), proofreader (62% run materials through AI before sharing), and career coach—72% have used AI for questions they hesitated to ask colleagues, while 69% leveraged it for interviews and career transitions.
Ninety-two percent report increased confidence in their professional skills thanks to AI, with 91% saying it enables them to contribute above their current role.
"Young leaders see AI as more than just a tool—they're leaning on it as a helpful collaborator and a trusted thought partner for professional development," said Kwon Kim. "Overall, the message from the next generation of leaders is loud and clear: AI must be personalized to be powerful."
The findings underscore that the future of workplace AI will be defined by deeply tailored, user-centric experiences that put individual context and style at the center.
