Gloo, a Boulder-based technology platform serving the faith ecosystem, has launched the Flourishing AI (FAI) Benchmark, a pioneering framework to assess how well Large Language Models (LLMs) support human flourishing. Developed with Barna Group and Valkyrie Intelligence, and drawing from the Global Flourishing Study, the benchmark evaluates LLMs across seven dimensions: Character, Relationships, Happiness, Meaning, Health, Finances, and Faith. This initiative aims to steer AI development toward values-aligned outcomes that enhance holistic well-being.
Gloo releases Flourishing AI (FAI) Benchmark to evaluate LLMs on human flourishing.
Assesses seven dimensions: Character (58), Relationships (67), Happiness (65), Meaning (56), Health (72), Finances (81), Faith (35).
Top models: OpenAI o3 (72), Gemini 2.5 Flash (68), Grok 3 (67), GPT-4.5 (66).
Significant gaps in Faith and Meaning highlight need for improved existential reasoning.
Framework uses over 1,200 curated questions, both objective and subjective.
Gloo invites researchers to refine the open, collaborative benchmark.
The FAI Benchmark, launched on July 10, 2025, shifts AI evaluation from technical performance to alignment with human values. “Core to what we do at Gloo is to serve those organizations who are helping people flourish,” said Scott Beck, CEO at Gloo. The framework uses over 1,200 curated questions from academic research, professional exams, and existing benchmarks, evaluated by judge LLMs with expert personas for each dimension. This approach ensures comprehensive assessment across objective and subjective criteria, prioritizing human well-being over mere functionality.
Initial results from evaluating 28 LLMs reveal no model reached the 90-point threshold for excellence in human flourishing. Average scores across dimensions show strengths in Finances (81) and Health (72), with OpenAI o3, Grok 3, and GPT-4.1 performing well in these areas. However, significant gaps exist in Faith (35) and Meaning (56), indicating LLMs struggle with existential reasoning, ethical reflection, and virtue-based guidance. OpenAI o3 led with a score of 87 in Character, while overall scores averaged 60, underscoring a critical gap in AI “wisdom.”
“Throughout my career, I’ve helped set industry benchmarks to make technologies more robust, transparent, and effective,” said Pat Gelsinger, executive chair at Gloo. “AI is one of the most consequential technologies shaping humanity’s future. To guide its development, we must measure it against the ultimate standard — human flourishing.” These findings highlight the need for AI to evolve beyond technical capabilities to address deeper human needs like purpose and moral character.
“The FAI Benchmark offers a new lens for evaluating AI — not just in terms of usefulness or safety, but in how well it supports the full spectrum of human flourishing,” said Steele Billings, chief AI officer at Gloo. Gloo’s open-source approach invites researchers from psychology, philosophy, theology, ethics, and AI safety to refine the framework. The methodology, detailed in a downloadable research paper at https://gloo.com/fai, includes transparent evaluation protocols and encourages community-driven improvements to questions, rubrics, and repositories.
The FAI Benchmark, built on the Global Flourishing Study’s six core dimensions—plus an added Faith and Spirituality category—addresses a gap in AI alignment research, which often focuses on harm prevention rather than promoting well-being. By emphasizing values-aligned AI, Gloo aims to inspire the AI community to prioritize human-centric development. The benchmark will be updated regularly as new models and research emerge, ensuring ongoing relevance.
Gloo’s FAI Benchmark sets a new standard for evaluating AI’s impact on human flourishing, revealing both strengths and critical gaps in current LLMs. With its collaborative, open-source approach, Gloo is poised to drive AI development toward meaningful, values-driven outcomes, benefiting faith-based and broader communities alike.
