GlobalFoundries has introduced its 22FDX+ with Resistive RAM (RRAM) technology, a significant enhancement to its embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) portfolio, announced at its annual Technology Summit in California on August 29, 2025. This innovative solution integrates RRAM with the high-performance, ultra-low power 22FDX platform, delivering secure, low-latency, and high-density memory for wireless microcontrollers and AI-driven IoT applications.

Quick Intel

  • GlobalFoundries launches 22FDX+ RRAM for AI and IoT devices.

  • Combines high-density RRAM with ultra-low power 22FDX platform.

  • Enables secure, scalable memory for edge intelligence applications.

  • Supports neural network weight storage for complex AI models.

  • Preliminary design kit available via GF Connect portal.

  • Volume production planned for 2026 with key customer engagements.

Advancing Edge Intelligence with RRAM

The 22FDX+ RRAM technology leverages industry-proven OxRAM to provide cost-effective, low-power read/write operations with high endurance and excellent data retention. Integrated with the 22FDX platform, it ensures enhanced reliability, security, and power efficiency, making it ideal for compact system-on-chip (SoC) solutions in intelligent devices such as sensors, wearables, and industrial systems. This combination supports the growing demand for high-performance edge computing in AI-enabled IoT applications.

Enabling AI and IoT Innovation

RRAM’s high density and scalability make it a perfect fit for AI-driven IoT devices requiring robust edge intelligence. The technology supports weight storage for neural networks, enabling more complex and effective AI models. By providing low-latency and high-density memory, 22FDX+ RRAM empowers developers to create versatile, power-efficient solutions for next-generation connected devices, addressing the needs of industries like automotive, smart mobile devices, and communications infrastructure.

Industry Impact and Customer Support

“We are pleased to add 22FDX+ RRAM to GF’s growing portfolio of differentiated technologies with the advanced features needed for power-efficient, connected intelligence at the edge,” said Ed Kaste, senior vice president of GF’s ultra-low power CMOS product line. “Our latest solution offers a compelling combination of density, performance and power efficiency, making it well-suited to tackle the challenges of next-generation, AI-enabled and connected devices.”

“GlobalFoundries is an important partner for Nordic Semiconductor as we push the boundaries of ultra-low power wireless solutions for the next generation of connected products and AI-enabled devices,” said Oyvind Strom, EVP Short-Range at Nordic Semiconductor. “We welcome GF’s introduction of embedded RRAM as a significant advancement that enables secure, scalable, and power-efficient edge intelligence. This kind of innovation - delivered through a resilient global supply chain - is essential to meeting growing demands for performance, reliability, and sustainability in connected systems.”

Availability and Future Development

A macro preliminary design kit for 22FDX+ RRAM is now accessible through GF’s self-service GF Connect portal, enabling customers to kickstart their design processes. Volume production is scheduled for 2026, supported by engagements with key customers. GlobalFoundries is also developing future generations of embedded RRAM and exploring its deployment across additional platforms to further enhance its offerings.
