DataHub, the leading open-source metadata platform, today announced it has joined the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI), a Snowflake-initiated open source project aimed at establishing a universal, vendor-neutral specification for semantic metadata. This standard will enable organizations to maintain consistent business metrics and data definitions across dashboards, notebooks, machine learning models, and analytics platforms—eliminating fragmentation and accelerating AI adoption.
Enterprises today struggle with inconsistent metrics—revenue calculated differently in BI dashboards versus ML models, or “active user” meaning one thing in marketing and another in finance. OSI directly addresses this by defining a common, open format for semantic metadata that any tool can adopt, regardless of vendor.
"By joining the Open Semantic Interchange, DataHub is committed to the creation of a universal standard that simplifies data operations and accelerates cross-industry innovation," said James Mayfield, VP of Product at DataHub. "As an open source maintainer, DataHub is a long-time supporter of open standards that allow customers to develop without fear of vendor lock-in. DataHub is committed to OSI's mission of enabling a universal standard for analytic metadata that will speed every organization's journey to AI at scale."
DataHub contributes its metadata platform expertise and real-world experience from thousands of deployments. By making semantic definitions discoverable within the broader data lineage and governance context, DataHub helps ensure metrics remain trustworthy and traceable from source to consumption.
"To unlock the true power of data and AI, we need a common foundation," said Josh Klahr, Director of Analytics Product Management at Snowflake. "Together with partners like DataHub, we're defining a vendor-neutral semantic standard that promotes clarity, consistency, and collaboration across the ecosystem. This work is vital to simplifying data operations and enabling the next wave of AI innovation."
The addition of DataHub strengthens OSI’s push toward a truly open, community-governed standard that prevents lock-in and puts control back in the hands of data teams. As adoption grows, organizations will gain the interoperability required to build reliable data products and confidently scale AI initiatives.
