New research from Cyberhaven Labs reveals the rapid and widespread corporate adoption of OpenAI's new ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser agent. The study, which tracks millions of users, highlights the unprecedented speed of this rollout while also underscoring the significant data security risks introduced by this new class of "agentic browsers."

  • Cyberhaven Labs reports rapid enterprise adoption of OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser.

  • 27.7% of enterprises already have at least one employee using the tool.

  • Atlas has 62 times more corporate downloads than a key competitor, Perplexity's Comet.

  • The technology sector shows the highest adoption rate at 67% of users.

  • Agentic browsers introduce critical data loss risks, including unsolved prompt injection attacks.

  • Cyberhaven provides technology to track data lineage and protect sensitive corporate information.

Unprecedented Enterprise Adoption Rates

Since its release, ChatGPT Atlas has spread through corporate environments at a scale and speed that outpaces previous AI tool launches. Cyberhaven's data shows that over a quarter of enterprises (27.7%) already have at least one employee who has downloaded the browser, with some organizations seeing usage rates as high as 10% of their entire workforce. On corporate macOS endpoints, 1.7% now have Atlas installed, equating to 17 out of every 1,000 company devices.

Industry Breakdown and Market Impact

The adoption is heavily concentrated in data-intensive industries. The technology sector leads with 67% of users, followed by pharmaceuticals at 50% and finance at 40%. The launch of Atlas has also revitalized the entire category of agentic browsers; during the week of its release, downloads of its competitor, Perplexity's Comet, surged sixfold. Despite this, Atlas's corporate download volume is 62 times greater than Comet's, cementing its early dominance.

Navigating the Emerging Security Landscape

While agentic browsers offer powerful new capabilities, they also present a novel and serious challenge for corporate data security. A leading concern is the threat of prompt injection, a currently unsolved security vulnerability that could allow malicious web content to manipulate an AI agent and potentially exfiltrate sensitive corporate data. These browsers create a new vector for data loss that traditional security tools are not designed to address. In response, Cyberhaven's endpoint agent and browser extension are designed to track data lineage within ChatGPT Atlas, helping organizations identify and protect sensitive information from these emerging threats.

The rapid uptake of ChatGPT Atlas signals a major shift in how employees interact with AI, moving from dedicated chat interfaces to integrated, always-on browser agents. This convergence of productivity and risk necessitates a new approach to data security, one that can understand and protect data as it flows through these powerful new AI-driven applications.

About Cyberhaven

Cyberhaven is reimagining data security. Until now, data security products have been limited to scanning data content or looking for specific user actions. Our AI-enabled data lineage technology analyzes billions of workflows to understand every piece of data within an organization, identify when it's at risk, and take action to protect it.
