Box, Inc. (NYSE:BOX), the leading Intelligent Content Management (ICM) platform, has announced the general availability of the Box Agent. This new AI-powered capability enables enterprises to execute complex, multi-step tasks on unstructured content using natural language instructions. The Box Agent acts as a unified AI engine across Box, securely searching files, analyzing data, synthesizing insights, and generating new content while fully respecting enterprise-grade security, governance, and permissions controls.

Box has also introduced enhancements to Box AI Studio, allowing administrators to create custom agents designed for specific, business-critical workflows.

“Enterprises everywhere are looking to harness AI to transform their businesses, but AI can only reach its full potential if it understands the unique context of an organization,” said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box. “That context lives within contracts, research materials, marketing assets, financial documents, and other forms of enterprise content. With the Box Agent, we’re reinventing how work gets done by bringing AI directly to the content that powers the enterprise. Organizations can start deploying AI agents today, with the controls and protections businesses depend on.”

How the Box Agent Transforms Enterprise Content Work

The Box Agent leverages advanced reasoning models to understand user intent, locate relevant content, reflect on required actions, and iterate until the task is completed successfully. All interactions occur within Box AI’s conversational interface, where users can revisit, refine, and continue previous sessions.

Key capabilities of the Box Agent include:

  • Searching across the entire content library to deliver clear, concise answers grounded in enterprise data, with source references for transparency.
  • Creating entirely new files in multiple formats, including Box Notes, Word documents, PDFs, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint decks.
  • Analyzing user-selected files such as contracts or reports to generate structured insights, comparisons, and summaries.
  • Interpreting natural-language questions while accounting for organizational terminology, relevance, and recency.
  • Completing multi-step tasks in a single flow by locating files, extracting information, and producing cohesive reports.
  • Summarizing complex documents and multi-file collections into actionable insights for faster decision-making.

The Box Agent is designed with enterprise security at its core. It only accesses files the user is authorized to view and never uses customer data to train third-party large language models.

Real-World Use Cases Across Departments

  • Legal teams can accelerate contract review by comparing documents against standard terms and highlighting exceptions.
  • Procurement teams can process invoices and vendor documents at scale, surfacing key fields and flagging discrepancies.
  • HR teams can generate personalized onboarding schedules by synthesizing role-specific handbooks and roadmaps.
  • Sales teams can automate complex RFP responses by pulling from the latest compliance guides and whitepapers.
  • Marketing teams can draft on-brand assets by referencing product requirements, messaging briefs, and brand guidelines.

Enhanced Custom Agent Creation with Box AI Studio

New enhancements to Box AI Studio enable administrators to build custom versions of the Box Agent tailored to specific business rules, knowledge bases, and datasets. This allows organizations to operationalize expertise at scale with consistency and precision.

“For companies managing countless contracts, placements, and customer documents across multiple systems, successful AI outcomes depend on the ability to tap into the knowledge contained within unstructured content,” said Matthew Campana, Vice President of Digital Transformation at The Judge Group. “The new Box Agent will transform how we automate business critical tasks by unlocking AI-powered insights across files. With a single query, the Box Agent can activate complex workflows and find essential data from files, while maintaining strict compliance and data protection standards.”

“AI in the enterprise depends on its grasp of the unique organizational context that defines a business,” said Amy Machado, Senior Research Manager, Content and Knowledge Management Strategies, IDC. “The Box Agent leverages this ‘unique context’ to transform content into actionable intelligence while ensuring that enterprise-grade security and permissions remain intact. With enhancements to Box AI Studio, enterprises aren’t just using generic AI; they are building custom agents tailored to their specific business rules and terminology. This means organizations can operationalize their expertise at scale, across the entire content lifecycle.”

The Box Agent is now generally available to customers on Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced plans. The ability to create new files in multiple formats is currently available in beta for Enterprise Advanced customers. Enterprise Advanced users can also enable Pro Mode for advanced reasoning and Expanded Mode for larger context windows to handle extensive multi-step workloads.

This launch is particularly significant for SaaS, IT, and enterprise technology teams seeking secure, intelligent ways to unlock value from unstructured content and automate complex business processes.
