AtScale joins the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI), an open source initiative led by Snowflake and ecosystem partners, bringing over a decade of semantic layer expertise to help define a vendor-neutral, open specification for consistent metrics and business logic across enterprise AI and BI tools.
The Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) addresses a critical challenge in modern data and AI ecosystems: fragmented definitions of business metrics and logic across tools, platforms, and teams. By establishing a common, open specification for semantic metadata, OSI enables organizations to achieve consistent, governed metrics regardless of the underlying data platform or consumption tool.
AtScale, a pioneer in universal semantic layer technology, brings more than ten years of hands-on experience to the initiative. The company has helped large enterprises migrate complex dimensional models from legacy systems to cloud-native architectures while preserving hierarchies, aggregation rules, and calculation behaviors. This practical expertise is particularly valuable as OSI evolves from conceptual design to production-ready standards.
AtScale’s Semantic Modeling Language (SML) serves as a mature, tool-agnostic specification already proven in enterprise environments. Insights from operating SML at scale will help ensure OSI’s specification is grounded in real-world complexity rather than theoretical models.
"We have long believed that the semantic layer is foundational for scalable enterprise AI, but it must be open to be effective," said David Mariani, CTO and Founder of AtScale. "By participating in the Open Semantic Interchange, we're contributing over a decade of experience migrating enterprises from closed proprietary systems to open, cloud-native semantic architecture to help ensure the standard reflects real-world complexity while preserving choice and interoperability across tools."
OSI, led by Snowflake and supported by partners across BI, data governance, data engineering, AI, financial services, and manufacturing, promotes a vendor-neutral foundation for semantic data. This interoperability simplifies data operations, reduces rework, and prepares organizations for next-generation AI applications that rely on trusted, consistent business logic.
AtScale’s Universal Semantic Layer already powers governed metrics across major cloud platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery) and consumption tools (Power BI, Tableau, Excel), as well as AI agents, copilots, and generative AI applications built on platforms like OpenAI and Anthropic. Aligning with OSI strengthens AtScale’s role in fostering an open ecosystem where semantic definitions are portable and accessible to both human analysts and autonomous AI systems.
"Unlocking the full potential of data and AI requires a common foundation, and the Open Semantic Interchange is the critical step in building that bedrock," said Josh Klahr, Director of Analytics Product Management at Snowflake. "Our collaboration with partners like AtScale establishes a unified, vendor-neutral standard for semantic data, ensuring clarity and consistency across the entire ecosystem. This initiative is essential for simplifying data operations, fostering innovation, and preparing organizations to build the next generation of AI applications."
AtScale’s participation in OSI underscores its long-standing commitment to open standards and interoperability, helping enterprises accelerate analytics, reduce risk, and scale AI initiatives with confidence.
