ATB Financial, Alberta's leading financial institution, has partnered with Nmbr, Canada's first dedicated embedded payroll software provider, to launch ATB Payroll. This first-of-its-kind partnership in Canada allows ATB's small business clients to run payroll directly from their business banking portal. The collaboration addresses one of the most complex and manual tasks for small businesses by automating processes like tax remittances and paystub issuance, eliminating the need for labor-intensive onboarding with a third-party provider.

Quick Intel

  • ATB Financial partners with Nmbr to launch embedded ATB Payroll.

  • It is the first such partnership between a bank and a payroll infrastructure provider in Canada.

  • Small businesses can run payroll directly from their ATB Business Portal.

  • The solution automates CRA remittances, paystubs, and compliance.

  • It offers two-day payroll processing at no extra cost.

  • The feature is currently in a pilot phase, with a broader rollout planned for 2026.

Solving a Major Small Business Pain Point

Payroll remains a significant burden for small and rural businesses, with nearly 40% still paying employees by e-transfer, cheque, or cash due to the complexity of managing multiple systems and ensuring compliance. ATB Payroll removes this friction by embedding the entire payroll process directly into the digital banking experience where business owners already manage their finances, giving them back valuable time and control.

A Seamless, Integrated Experience

The integration leverages ATB's financial infrastructure and Nmbr's modern payroll APIs to create a seamless bridge between compliance and convenience. Clients can access payroll through their ATB Business Portal, verify account balances in real time, manage tax compliance, and process payments faster. A key benefit is the offering of two-day payroll at no extra cost, a first among major Canadian financial institutions.

Driving Digital Innovation in Banking

This partnership is a core part of ATB's broader strategy to expand the tools and services available on its business banking platform. By embedding a critical function like payroll, ATB is positioning itself at the forefront of digital financial innovation in Canada, using technology to help Alberta's entrepreneurs grow and thrive by simplifying their most critical operations.

"Payroll has long been one of the biggest pain points for small businesses," said Simon Bourgeois, CEO of Nmbr. "By embedding payroll directly into ATB’s digital banking experience, we’re giving Alberta’s entrepreneurs back valuable time and control, while helping the bank deliver real innovation to its customers."

"At ATB, we are constantly seeking new innovations to better support and empower Alberta businesses," said Azim Esmail, Associate Vice President, ATB Ventures. "Developing and launching tools that simplify critical operations for our clients is a powerful example of how we can use innovation to help them grow and thrive."

This partnership marks a significant shift in the Canadian financial services landscape. By seamlessly integrating payroll into business banking, ATB and Nmbr are not just simplifying a process; they are redefining the role of a financial institution in supporting the operational success of its small business clients.
