Alteryx has released its "2026 State of Data Analysts in the Age of AI" report, highlighting the growing role of AI in enterprise decision-making while emphasizing the continued importance of human oversight, governance, and trusted business logic.

The report found that although AI adoption among analysts is now widespread, organizations continue to face significant challenges related to data quality, governance, and the reliability of AI-generated outcomes. According to the findings, analysts are increasingly responsible for validating AI outputs and ensuring decisions remain aligned with operational requirements and business policies.

  • Alteryx found that 96% of data analysts now actively use AI tools.
  • Analysts spend nearly four hours weekly validating AI-generated outputs.
  • Poor data quality and governance account for 47% of failed AI and analytics projects.
  • Only 3% of analysts favor fully autonomous AI without human oversight.
  • 65% believe AI systems work best when business logic is managed at the business level.
  • AI-generated insights now influence most business-critical decisions at many organizations.

Human Oversight Remains Essential for Enterprise AI

The Alteryx report suggests that while organizations are rapidly adopting AI and agentic AI systems, human involvement remains central to ensuring AI-generated outcomes are accurate, explainable, and trustworthy.

According to the research, analysts spend an average of 3.7 hours each week reviewing and correcting AI-generated outputs. The study found that analysts are increasingly responsible for validating AI-driven calculations, identifying inconsistencies, and ensuring outputs align with company policies and operational standards.

The report also revealed that only 3% of analysts are comfortable with fully autonomous AI systems operating without routine human involvement, while 46% prefer a human-in-the-loop model where AI systems require approval before taking action.

As organizations continue integrating AI into workflows, many analysts believe business teams should retain ownership of the logic AI systems operate on. Around 65% of respondents said AI and agent-based systems are most productive when business logic is managed at the business level rather than solely by centralized IT teams.

"AI is already influencing how businesses make decisions every day, but our research highlights a reality many organizations are now confronting: trust matters just as much as speed," said Andy MacMillan, CEO at Alteryx. "The people closest to the business play a critical role because they understand the logic, rules, and operational context behind decisions, whether that's pricing models, compliance requirements, or operational thresholds, and that business logic is constantly evolving."

Data Quality and Governance Continue to Challenge AI Initiatives

The report identified poor data quality and governance as the leading obstacle to successful AI and analytics initiatives. Nearly half of failed AI and analytics projects — 47% — were attributed to issues related to data quality or governance.

Although 79% of analysts said they believe their organizations are prepared for AI at scale, the operational reality remains complex. Respondents reported spending an average of 5.7 hours each week preparing and cleaning data before it can be used effectively for analytics and AI workflows.

Governance concerns are also intensifying as enterprises embed AI deeper into operational systems. Access control and data exposure were identified as the top governance challenge by 42% of respondents, followed closely by regulatory compliance concerns at 41%.

The findings suggest that enterprises increasingly require not only trusted data, but also governed workflows, operational context, and clearly defined business logic to support scalable AI deployment.

AI Adoption Accelerates Across Business Operations

AI is becoming deeply embedded in enterprise decision-making processes, according to the report. Nearly all surveyed analysts — 96% — said they actively use AI tools in their daily work.

Among IT leaders, 85% reported measurable productivity gains from AI adoption, while 79% said AI is helping organizations make faster business decisions. Additionally, half of analysts and 62% of IT leaders said that most or nearly all business-critical decisions are now influenced by AI-generated insights.

At the same time, organizations continue integrating AI into technologies such as cloud data warehouses and business intelligence platforms. However, many businesses still struggle to interpret and explain AI-generated outputs to stakeholders, with 43% identifying explainability and trust as ongoing challenges.

The Role of Data Analysts Continues to Evolve

The report also highlighted the changing role of data analysts in the AI era. Rather than replacing analysts, AI is increasingly acting as a collaborative tool that enables teams to focus on higher-value work.

Around 82% of analysts said automation is improving their effectiveness by helping them work faster and streamline repetitive tasks. Looking ahead, respondents identified evolving skill requirements and real-time analytics as two of the biggest factors likely to reshape the profession over the next five years.

Alteryx said analysts and operational teams will continue playing a critical role in defining and maintaining the business logic, workflows, policies, and governance standards that AI systems depend on to deliver trusted and repeatable outcomes across enterprise operations.
