A third of Americans say they would rather watch highlights from a show than every full episode, rising to 43% among Gen Z, according to new research from Bango. Survey of 2,500 US adults reveals appetite for short and vertical videos beyond social media as streaming services compete for attention with social feeds one clip at a time.

Quick Intel

  • 32% of Americans prefer show highlights over full episodes, rising to 43% among Gen Z per Bango survey.
  • 40% would use streaming services more often if they offered short clips, rising to 53% of Gen Z.
  • 37% use streaming service more often now that it includes vertical video clips, rising to 47% among Millennials.
  • 51% say clips help them discover shows worth paying to watch, connecting discovery with subscription value.
  • 44% see value in short videos from trusted brand while 37% say curated clips help keep kids off social media.
  • 61% more likely to keep subscription if available for less through bundle, with telco and banking bundling opportunities.

Short Videos Without Social Feed As Alternative for Families

Preference raises question about how we watch: are audience attention spans shrinking, or simply looking for different ways to watch. Appetite already reflected in viewing habits and subscription retention drivers.

For families, appeal of bite-sized entertainment comes with question: can children enjoy short videos while spending less time on social media. More than four in ten Americans see value in short videos from brand they trust. Findings come as international restrictions on children's social media access put alternatives under scrutiny, with Australia banning under-16s since December 2025 and UK planning follow in 2027. US findings suggest audience for curated clips from familiar streaming platforms giving families another way to enjoy short videos.

That appeal could contribute to perceived value, with 40% saying original or exclusive short videos could help justify price of streaming subscription.

Discovery, Viewing and Affordable Access Through Bundling

Appetite for highlights does not mean audiences stopped caring about full-length stories. In same survey, 65% say new episodes of shows they follow are important in decision to keep paying. Room for both: something entertaining to watch in spare moment and series worth settling in for.

For telcos, short-form entertainment could strengthen appeal of streaming services offered through bundles, giving customers more ways to enjoy subscriptions they already pay for. Younger consumers already using bundles to manage costs: 21% of Gen Z moved from paying separately to getting through bundle to save money in past year. Consumers also see value in bundling streaming with other services: 23% say music subscription would make streaming more valuable, followed by food delivery benefits 20% and shopping memberships 19%.
