Wasabi Technologies appoints Zachary Smith, a veteran in digital infrastructure and cloud computing, to its Board of Directors. Smith, co-founder of Packet and former Equinix edge computing leader, brings extensive expertise in AI-era infrastructure, automation, and platform scaling to support Wasabi's growth in high-performance, AI-ready cloud storage.
Wasabi Technologies, known for its hot cloud storage platform, welcomes Zachary Smith to its Board amid accelerating AI-driven demand for scalable, cost-effective data solutions. Smith's career spans foundational contributions to cloud and edge infrastructure, making him well-suited to guide Wasabi's evolution in the AI era.
Smith's background includes early work at Voxel, co-founding Packet in 2014 to pioneer automated bare metal infrastructure, and steering Equinix's edge and connectivity business after the acquisition. Most recently, he co-founded Datum, focused on open network cloud architecture. His involvement in the AI community positions him to help Wasabi adapt products and strategy for AI workloads.
“AI is quickly changing the landscape for Wasabi, with several of our largest customers now from the AI world. We aspire to be the default storage partner for the AI industry, and that means not only new products for AI workloads, but also an AI industry perspective at the Board level,” said David Friend, co-founder and CEO of Wasabi Technologies. “Zac has been deeply involved in the AI community for years and will be instrumental in helping Wasabi adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace.”
Wasabi continues to challenge traditional hyperscale models by offering enterprise-grade performance with predictable economics, no egress fees, and freedom from vendor lock-in. As data volumes explode and AI applications require fast, accessible storage, Smith's insights will support product innovation, ecosystem expansion, and global scaling.
“It’s rare to see a company successfully enter a hyperscaler-dominated market and not just compete, but win,” said Smith. “Wasabi has built a differentiated platform and a powerful brand by challenging the status quo in cloud economics and performance. I’m excited to support the team as they extend that advantage into the AI-driven future of infrastructure.”
The appointment reinforces Wasabi's mission to make cloud storage affordable, predictable, and secure, empowering customers and partners to maximize data value without traditional constraints.
